Forza 3 PC system requirements. Test configuration and testing methodology

Developers from the studio turn 10 announced that Forza Horizon 3 became the owner of the gold status. This means that work on the game is almost completed and nothing can stop it from appearing on store shelves on September 27 this year. It is worth recalling that Forza Horizon 3 for the first time in the history of this series will be available not only on Xbox consoles (Xbox One), but also on PC.

Forza Horizon 3 system requirements

  • HDD: 55GB

At the same time, this information should be treated with caution. The fact is that when analyzing previous examples of Xbox-exclusives ported to PC, even on devices that fully meet all the requirements, problems may arise. However turn 10 promises that this will not happen to their brainchild, moreover, it will not just be a porting of the Xbox version to the PC. It is reported that computer owners will receive an additional set of options, such as screen resolution, level of detail, shadow quality, and others, a full list of which will be announced later.

The specifics of PC gaming is such that before proceeding with the passage, you must first familiarize yourself with its system requirements and correlate it with the existing configuration.

To do this simple action, you do not need to know the exact technical characteristics of each model of processors, video cards, motherboards and other components of any personal computer. The usual comparison of the main lines of components is quite enough.

For example, if the minimum system requirements for a game include a processor at least Intel Core i5, then you should not expect it to run on i3. However, comparing processors from different manufacturers is more difficult, which is why developers often indicate names from two main companies - Intel and AMD (processors), Nvidia and AMD (video cards).

Above are system requirements. It is worth noting that the division into minimum and recommended configurations is done for a reason. It is believed that meeting the minimum requirements is enough to launch the game and complete it from start to finish. However, to achieve the best performance, you usually have to lower the graphic settings.

Brief information about the game

  • Release date: September 27, 2016
  • Genre: car simulator
  • Publisher: Microsoft Studios
  • Developer: Playground Games

Forza Horizon 3 is an open-world racing game developed by Playground Games and published by publisher Microsoft Studios for PC and Microsoft Xbox One. The game was announced on June 13, 2016 at E3, with a release date set for September 27. The game was released on both platforms at the same time at the end of September, and it also supports cross-platform play between different versions through the Xbox Play Anywhere program.

This is the third installment of Forza Horizon and the ninth game in the Forza series. Unlike previous games in the Horizon sub-series, in the third part you can independently create racing festivals, promote them, hire other players and create your own race configurations, choosing cars allowed to race, choosing a track, time of day and weather.

In terms of mechanics in Forza Horizon 3, maybe there are no special changes, but this is not necessary, in this sense it is close to the arcade ideal. Drivatar's system of mimicking the behavior of real Drivatar players works well, and computer-controlled opponents really resemble real people, they behave aggressively and make mistakes - the illusion of a live community is simulated well.

The game takes place in Australia, the playing area in the new racing project is twice as large as it was in Forza Horizon 2. The authors developed off-road racing from the previous part, and in the third game of the series you can drive not only on roads and cities, but also in the jungle and desert .

And it is not necessary to do this on a suitable car - you can even drive a Ferrari over rough terrain. Accordingly, among the cars available in the game there are cars of different classes and eras: both classic racing cars from the last century, as well as modern supercars and huge SUVs. In total, about 350 cars are available in Forza Horizon 3, including models such as the Lamborghini Centenario and the Ford F-150 Raptor.

Back in the spring of 2015, Microsoft announced its own Turn 10 Studios game engine called ForzaTech for future Forza games, including Forza Motorsport 6: Apex, and revealed some details about the future of the series at E3 in June of that year.

The new engine received support for the DirectX 12 graphics API and the Universal Windows Platform (UWP). We don't have any specific technical data about the engine, but it looks like it uses DirectX 12, but is limited by the capabilities of the previous big version of this API - Feature Level 11_0. That doesn't stop the game from looking amazing, and from a graphical standpoint, Forza Horizon 3 is one of the best racing games out there. The picturesque nature of Australia, the coast, forests and fields, as well as megacities are made at a very high quality level.

Models of cars, the world around and weather effects look very realistic in the game. This is not surprising, because the developers of Forza Horizon 3 used photogrammetry technology, which simplifies the modeling of realistic landscapes using a large number of photographs, and many modern algorithms and techniques are used in rendering.

System requirements

Minimum system requirements:

  • CPU Intel Core i5-3570;
  • 8 GB;
  • video card Nvidia GeForce 750 Ti or AMD Radeon R7 250X;
  • video memory of at least 2 GB;
  • free space on HDD 55 GB;
  • CPU Intel Core i7-3820;
  • RAM of at least 12 GB;
  • video card Nvidia GeForce GTX 970 or GTX 1060 or AMD Radeon R9 290X or RX 480;
  • video memory of at least 4 GB;
  • free space on HDD 55 GB;
  • 64-bit operating system Microsoft Windows 10 Anniversary Edition;

"Ideal" system requirements (resolution 3840x2160):

  • CPU Intel Core i7-6700;
  • RAM size 16 GB;
  • video card Nvidia GeForce GTX 980 Ti or GTX 1080 or AMD Radeon R9 Fury X;
  • video memory of at least 6 GB;
  • free space on SSD 55 GB;
  • 64-bit operating system Microsoft Windows 10 Anniversary Edition;

The obligatory use of a 64-bit Windows operating system has already become familiar, it helps to get away from the inconvenient limitation of 2 GB of used RAM per process. But in this case, the requirements are even more stringent: the game requires only a special edition of Windows 10 Anniversary Edition. This is one of the first games to exclusively require the use of this version of the OS, as it actively uses the capabilities of DirectX 12 and is one of the important projects for promoting Windows 10 as a gaming platform.

The game's hardware requirements are very high even by today's standards, although among the minimum suitable video cards, developers cite relatively weak GeForce GTX 750 Ti and Radeon R7 250X, which are relatively close in performance. But this is only the bare minimum needed to run the game only at low settings.

To run the game, a system with at least 8 GB of RAM and a powerful multi-core processor is required. Recommendations on the use of powerful CPUs are quite justified, the game at any graphics settings heavily loads the test processor, and this applies to both multithreading and the performance of a single core. Those who want to play at higher graphics settings will need a gaming system already with 12-16 GB of memory and with the most powerful Intel Core i7 processor!

For Full HD resolution, the GeForce GTX 970 and GTX 1060, Radeon R9 290X and RX 480 models with 4 GB of VRAM are recommended, and these solutions are really close to each other in performance, although AMD graphics cards usually have some advantage from using some features DirectX 12, such as asynchronous shader execution (it is not known if this feature is used in Forza Horizon 3). It looks like the game has some serious system requirements for the entire system.

The developers have separately highlighted recommendations for the “ideal” gaming system and 4K resolution. To play smoothly at ultra settings in such conditions, you will need a video card no worse than the GeForce GTX 980 Ti, GeForce GTX 1080 or Radeon R9 Fury X, with at least 6 GB of memory. Where did they get the Radeon R9 Fury X with 6GB of memory anyway? Apart from this oddity, the rest of the recommendations look adequate. The ultra-recommendations already include the Intel Core i7-6700 processor, which additionally hints at the special importance of a powerful CPU in this project. In general, the game needs the highest performance CPU and GPU to ensure gaming comfort.

Test configuration and testing methodology

Forza Horizon 3 is not part of the marketing and technical programs of AMD and Nvidia, but both of them released special versions of drivers optimized specifically for this game for the release of this project. It was the version of the 372.90 WHQL drivers designed for Forza Horizon 3 that we used in our tests of Gigabyte video cards.

The game is available exclusively in the Microsoft app store, and its system requirements are Windows 10 and DirectX 12. Alas, all this also speaks of the use of the UWP platform, which drank our blood during Quantum Break testing. We will not go back to a long conversation about how using UWP worsens the situation for players and testers - it is enough that familiar and convenient utilities like Fraps and MSI Afterburner do not work in this mode, and you have to use the tools of much less thoughtful and convenient applications, like Mirilli Action!

The mention of this utility suggests that in the game in question there is not only no built-in ability for performance testing (there is only an instant FPS counter), but even recording and playing the gameplay. So there is simply no possibility of repeatable measurements, and our test scene differed in many details with each new run. However, due to some limitations (see below), this is not so important, and the test error does not exceed a few percent, so this option is suitable for an express test.

Judging by our measurements and observations, the performance in this game most often depends on the speed of calculations of a single CPU core, which is almost always loaded at almost 100%, while all the others do not work even at half their capacity. Accordingly, the frame rate in the game depends very much on the performance of one CPU core, and a sufficiently powerful graphics processor like the GeForce GTX 1060 and higher is only 70-80% loaded with work at best. Here's what the CPU core load chart looks like in a typical game:

Achieving a consistent 60 FPS without dropping below that level is almost impossible on any system without overclocking, and a top-end CPU running at around 4.5 GHz is vital to achieve smoothness. In our studies, we always use a CPU of a not so high level, and even without overclocking. Therefore, in our tests, the speed of all GPUs very often rested on the capabilities of the CPU. It’s not clear why the game loads only one processor core so much, but this feature also causes extremely unpleasant FPS jerks, which happen most often while driving in the city at high speed, and the worst thing is when racing around the city with a bunch of opponents controlled by artificial intelligence .

That is why we decided to test Forza Horizon 3 in two modes that differ greatly in system load: Open world - the racer rides alone on a simple terrain when the GPU is more loaded with work, and Rain race - an urban race in rainy conditions, when the load on the CPU is maximum . We can consider the frame rate in the first mode as an average for the entire game, and the FPS in the rain race will indicate the lowest possible performance in the game we are considering today.

By default, the PC version of the game includes a cap of 30 FPS after optimization for the current configuration, as well as a dynamic change in image quality, which degrades rendering quality on the fly in favor of speed. Since 30 FPS is not the ultimate dream, and we measure the performance of different GPUs in equal conditions, we turned off both dynamic optimization and the frame rate limiter, which gives a theoretical possibility of reaching 144 FPS on our system.

I must say that it is very difficult, if not impossible, to achieve a stable 60 FPS under such conditions. Even on a very powerful system, you will have to limit yourself to a lower rendering resolution and dynamic rendering quality, and then short-term drops below this limit are possible in cases where a large number of objects and cars appear in the frame. This is very strange, because with normal optimization of the engine with DirectX 12 support, there should not be a problem with almost 100% load on one CPU core. The game probably uses this core for some other purpose, such as decrypting the contents of game files. By the way, such an overestimated load of only one CPU core was noted earlier in other UWP games, such as Gears of War Ultimate Edition and Forza Motorsport 6: Apex.

But stable 30 FPS in the game we are considering today is relatively easy to get, even at maximum settings, including increased rendering resolution and multisampling anti-aliasing (MSAA). It seems that such a task was faced by the developers - achieving 30 frames per second is quite possible on the recommended configuration. True, for a dynamic racing game, 60 FPS is very desirable, and not high resolution and anti-aliasing. It's a pity that even near-top CPUs and GPUs don't provide this level of performance in Forza Horizon 3.

So our goal will be exactly 30 FPS, and not a single frame lower, but even a little higher - the level of 40 FPS in the Rain race. An average frame rate of 40 FPS in this mode makes sure that the minimum frame rate does not fall below the 30 FPS level, which is what we want. By the way, a stable frame rate at this level also means a stable 33ms per frame rendering, which is vital for a smooth game at a relatively low FPS. In combination with high-quality smoothing in motion (motion blur), playing in this mode can provide positive emotions.

Forza Horizon 3's VRAM usage is above average, though not the most aggressive we've seen. With medium settings at Full HD resolution, 4 GB of VRAM is enough, as with just high settings. With ultra-high settings, in the case of a resolution of 2560x1440, you will need to have already 5 GB, and at 4K resolutions, the use of video memory will reach 6 GB, so for 4K resolution and maximum settings you will need a top-end video card with 6-8 GB of memory. But for all other conditions, even less is enough - 4 GB is enough for this game.

Impact of settings on performance and quality

Graphic settings in the game Forza Horizon 3 are changed in the initial menu of the game and in-game, which can also be called directly during the gameplay. Alas, changing some of the graphical settings in the game does not take effect immediately and requires a restart of the application. And in general, due to the lack of a benchmark and recording / playing the gameplay, it is categorically inconvenient to adjust the rendering quality in this game.

In the main image settings menu, you can select display options (windowed or full screen), change the screen resolution, adjust the operation of vertical synchronization, enable or disable the frame rate limiter and dynamic change in rendering quality, as well as enable subtitles, FPS counter and anti-aliasing in motion (motion blur).

There is also an additional menu of advanced image quality settings in the game, in which you can find several detailed parameters, as well as select a preset settings profile. In our work, we used the profiles Medium (medium settings), High (high settings) and Ultra (ultra settings) without any changes:

Medium settings

high settings

Ultra settings

As always, it is better to adjust the rendering quality and the final performance to your requirements, based on your own feelings (there is no benchmark in the game, but you can use the game FPS counter). Moreover, the influence of some parameters on the resulting rendering quality with different settings in the game is not always noticeable, especially in screenshots. In videos, it's a little easier to notice the different rendering quality corresponding to the different levels of graphics settings, but it's also not easy.

The medium quality profile does not differ too much from the ultra quality, but the difference is in the textures of different resolutions and filtering, in the detail and quality of lighting and shading, the quality of effects, etc., as well as in the method of full-screen anti-aliasing. However, the difference, although noticeable, is not striking, very often you have to look closely to see it.

Medium settings

Ultra (Ultra) settings

Detailed graphics settings in the game include a wide range of options for choosing the level of texture filtering, the quality of shadows and objects, the quality of reflections and detail. Due to the difficulty of running tests in Forza Horizon 3, we haven't explored all the settings as thoroughly as we usually do, but we'll still give some recommendations. In general, the game doesn't have much of an effect on rendering resolution compared to other games, so it's often possible to increase the resolution without much of a performance hit.

Reducing the quality of shadows and detail from ultra to high can give quite a significant performance boost in cases where it is not limited by the speed of a single CPU core, and lowering parameters such as the quality of reflections will not lead to a significant decrease in image quality and may give some increase in performance. FPS, all the more important in a fast-paced racing game. And the difference between the two highest levels of texture quality is not too much, even at the average level the quality of the surfaces in the game is quite high.

Performance Testing

We tested the performance of four Gigabyte video cards based on GeForce GPUs belonging to different price ranges and architecture generations from Nvidia. When testing, we used the two most common screen resolutions (1920x1080 and 2560x1440), as well as three preset settings - Medium, High and Ultra.

We do not consider settings below the average level, since even the weakest GeForce GTX 960 video card must cope with medium settings at least in Full HD resolution. Traditionally for our site, we check the "Ultra" rendering quality mode as the most requested setting among gaming enthusiasts. Let's first consider the most popular Full HD resolution with a profile of medium quality settings.

Resolution 1920×1080 (Full HD)

From the system requirements presented by the developers, it is clear that the game places strict demands on the power of both the GPU and the CPU. And almost 100% loading of one of the cores of the central processor led to the fact that the rendering speed was very often limited not by the capabilities of the video cards. But even the GeForce GTX 960, as the junior model in our comparison, under the conditions of medium graphic settings and the most common resolution, managed to ensure smooth gaming quite well.

All the video cards we compared in simple conditions were able to provide a smooth frame change in the game, providing a stable 30 FPS. The older graphics cards delivered between 48 and 52 FPS even in the harsh conditions of a rainy city race at night, and all of them were able to deliver over 60 FPS when simply driving around the Forza Horizon 3 open world environment.

True, even the two most powerful video cards of the current generation, the GeForce GTX 1060 and GTX 1070 at medium settings, although they were close to the ideal smoothness of 60 FPS, still could not provide such speed in urban racing in bad weather. In this mode, the speed rested precisely on the capabilities of one of the CPU cores, which is clear from the close results of the three older video cards. It can be clearly seen that at least at Full HD resolution and medium settings, Forza Horizon 3 is very much limited by the speed of the CPU, not the GPU.

At high quality settings, the frame rate dropped quite a bit, even in the case of the younger model of the previous generation GeForce GTX 960. In the rain race, the FPS remained almost the same, since the rendering speed was limited by the capabilities of the CPU. All video cards were able to provide speeds above 30 FPS this time, and the minimum frame rate even for the GTX 960 did not fall below the important mark of 30 FPS, which can be called acceptable comfort. Well, the GTX 970 almost reached the level of the GTX 1060/1070.

By the way, two older graphics cards based on Pascal family GPUs were able to provide a very decent performance of more than 50 FPS on average even in a rain race around the city, which we consider a very comfortable level, although it is still not possible to reach 60 FPS. happened. Judging by the lack of performance difference between the GTX 1060 and GTX 1070, we again conclude that these video cards ran into the capabilities of the test CPU - single-threaded computing speed, when one of the cores is constantly loaded with almost 100% work.

But in the case of setting the ultra-profile settings, the drop in speed turned out to be greater than when moving from medium to high. It is in this mode that the GeForce GTX 970 and GTX 960 video cards begin to show a clear lack of performance. The frame rate of the two previous generation models dropped below the minimum comfortable value of 30 FPS in ultra mode, and they cannot provide smooth gaming. It seems that this pair (especially the GTX 970) is additionally beginning to experience a shortage of local video memory with their volume of 3.5-4 GB. The difference in rendering speed between the High and Ultra profiles turned out to be too big for them, and the game performance became unacceptable. If during normal rides through the fields and valleys in the game everything is fine, then the race in the city with a bunch of rivals leads to a drop in speed below 30 frames per second.

Two current-generation graphics cards, belonging to the GeForce GTX 1000 series and based on Pascal family graphics processors, performed much better in such difficult conditions. Both video cards, the GeForce GTX 1060 and GTX 1070, showed quite decent 44-47 FPS on average in the rain race around the city, and there were definitely no drops in frame rate below 30 FPS, and this is enough for a comfortable game in Forza Horizon 3. Alas, but stable 60 frames per second could not be obtained even in the open world mode - with an average frame rate of 57-60 FPS, drawdowns to the level of 40-45 FPS were observed.

Resolution 2560×1440 (WQHD)

With a higher rendering resolution of 2560×1440 pixels, the performance of all Gigabyte solutions in the game decreased quite a bit, which once again confirms the focus of the overall performance in the game on the power of one CPU core, and sufficiently powerful GPUs do not limit the speed. In addition to the younger model GeForce GTX 960, which, in WQHD resolution, copes with the task with difficulty, providing only 36 FPS in heavy and 59 FPS in light racing mode - this may be enough for undemanding players, but it would still be better to lower the graphics settings a little. .

The speed output of the three older solutions from Gigabyte is about the same as in the lower resolution. All of these GeForce graphics cards (GTX 970, GTX 1060 and GTX 1070) provide good gaming comfort in conditions where the frame rate on them never drops below 30 FPS. Even in demanding city racing mode in bad weather, they deliver almost 50 fps on average, not to mention over 60 fps in touring mode. True, they did not reach the bar of maximum comfort in the form of a stable 60 frames per second.

When playing at high quality settings in WQHD resolution, the GeForce GTX 960, as the weakest video card in our comparison, is even more clearly lacking in performance. The frame rate level in the night racing mode through the city with rain has already dropped to the minimum acceptable level, and for a comfortable gameplay, you will have to lower the graphic settings. Even with 54 FPS in walking mode, 32 FPS in a race will feel uncomfortable on average.

The power of older video cards based on Pascal family GPUs, on which the GeForce GTX 1060 and GTX 1070 are based, is quite enough to maintain the frame rate at a comfortable level of 47-50 FPS on average even in a rainy race around the city, and this is definitely enough for a smooth game. Once again, we see the emphasis on rendering speed in the ability of one of the CPU cores - even in such conditions it is heavily loaded with work, which leads to similar performance of the two most powerful GeForce. But the GTX 970 is already clearly lagging behind, especially in racing mode. Although its speed is still enough for comfort, at ultra settings this video card is unlikely to cope with its task.

And so it happened, with the Ultra quality settings profile set to WQHD resolution, only the two fastest GeForce video cards from our comparison can hardly cope with the task of providing acceptable comfort and smoothness in an urban race, providing 42-44 frames per second on average in such conditions. the minimum value is more than 30 FPS. This will be quite enough for a comfortable game for the majority of players who do not impose excessive demands on the smoothness of the gameplay in the form of a 60 FPS bar.

The emphasis on the ability of a single CPU core, although weakening, does not disappear even in this difficult mode, when top GPUs are only 80-85% loaded with work, and far from everything depends on their abilities. Forza Horizon 3 is extremely demanding on CPU power, and only overclocking the CPU to somewhere up to 4-4.5 GHz will help users achieve 60 FPS, but the GeForce GTX 1060 level will be quite enough even for ultra-settings.

The two solutions of the previous generation in the ultra-settings mode at WQHD resolution are completely sour. Even the best of them, the GeForce GTX 970, delivered an average rain race frame rate of just 26 FPS on average, far from the minimum comfortable 30 FPS, although it was able to deliver acceptable speed in Forza Horizon 3 single-handed driving through the game world. The speed of the GTX 970 and GTX 960 was also affected by the already insufficient amount of video memory. Under such conditions, the game needs about 5 GB of video memory, and the 3.5-4 GB they have is already frankly not enough. And in many ways, therefore, the rendering speed turned out to be noticeably below the comfortable limit.

Conclusion

The game Forza Horizon 3 proved to be very demanding, primarily on the power of central processors, and especially on their single-threaded performance. GPU performance requirements are also high, but not even the most powerful solutions like the GeForce GTX 1060 constantly work only at 70-80% of their capabilities. Almost all tested Gigabyte video cards, even the GeForce GTX 960, are suitable for playing in Full HD resolution at settings up to high inclusive, but for WQHD resolution, the GeForce GTX 1060 and GeForce GTX 970 are already desirable, recommended by the game developers themselves.

Under the lightest conditions of medium quality settings in Full HD, all Gigabyte solutions reviewed showed sufficient performance for a smooth game with more than 30 FPS, but in order to get a comfortable frame rate at this resolution at maximum settings, you will need to use GeForce GTX 1060 video cards or GTX 1070. True, due to the emphasis on the CPU, achieving a stable 60 FPS in any conditions is impossible, since it does not depend on the GPU. Given this, to get a higher rendering speed, you will have to change the central processor, and not the graphics processor.

The weakest video card of the previous generation - the GeForce GTX 960 - was able to provide a smooth game with at least 30 FPS at high settings in Full HD, and in WQHD it is close to this, but on the verge. In general, it is highly desirable for owners of monitors with resolutions higher than Full HD to use more powerful video cards, such as the GeForce GTX 1060 and higher - these modern solutions were able to show almost 60 FPS at high settings and provided a fairly smooth frame change at ultra-settings in Full HD and WQHD even under the most severe conditions of our testing.

The game Forza Horizon 3 clearly lacks the capabilities of mid-range processors, it imposes ultra-high demands on CPU power, especially in terms of computing speed on a single core. During testing, the test processor was loaded with work on average at the level of 35-40%, sometimes up to 50%, but one of the computing cores almost always worked at 95-100% of its capabilities, and this is what limited the rendering speed in most cases. And here the use of the modern version of DirectX 12 did not help in any way, which allows for a performance boost due to special optimizations designed specifically for such conditions. Probably, the problem lies in the insufficient optimization of the game engine, and only the use of the most powerful CPUs, and even with overclocking, can save the situation - it’s not for nothing that the game developers wrote the Intel Core i7-6700 processor into the “ideal” system requirements.

But the game's requests for RAM for modern games are quite familiar - the system memory for the game needs at least 8 GB, but it would be better to have a reserve in the form of 12-16 GB, although the game itself takes up only 6-8 GB in memory. The requirements for video memory are slightly higher than average by today's standards - at medium settings in Full HD, the game requires about 3.5 GB of video memory, for higher picture quality at maximum settings, you will need 4.5 GB, but in conditions of ultra-quality and high resolution, the game can already use up to 5-6 GB of video memory.

Game Features
As already mentioned, the whole Australia will be presented to us for research, which will resemble the real map of this continent as much as possible. By the way, our game world will be completely open and seamless, and most importantly, it will be about twice as large as the one we could see in the second part of the series, and this already means a lot.
In addition to the usual single player mode, the game has a co-op, and in what form it will be, we will be able to see very soon, perhaps this will open a campaign for four players before us. There is no doubt about the graphic level - it is worthy of its series and looks more than modern.
The developers promise to add about 350 different cars to the game. Each of the cars can be subjected to detailed tuning. In addition to changing the appearance, you can change elements of the car such as the engine or transmission.
