Why is adaptation needed?

Our approach to adaptation

So what is this method? We decided that the onboarding process should be both educational and fun, and outlined the basic principles that will help us achieve our goal:

Learning should be fun; the goal must be clear and achievable; information must be presented consistently; repetition is the mother of learning; The difficulty level should match the player's skill.

Using these principles as an example, I will talk about the challenges that we have to face while working on adaptation, and also talk about a new mode created specifically for summoners taking their very first steps in the game - Mentor Bots. This is not just a new level of difficulty in the game against bots: “Bot Mentors” is a flexible training system for beginners that is more tolerant of their mistakes. Thanks to it, aspiring summoners will be able to grow wings before jumping out of the nest.

Learning should be fun

Trying to make learning fun, especially in games like MOBAs, is not the easiest task. The most obvious way during the game may turn out to be the most boring. Onboarding new players isn't just about training, you have to give them a sense of drive so they want to continue playing.


We started by crossing out the boring elements: constant loss of control; a huge number of tooltips; death in the first game, when you still don’t understand what and how to do, etc. The current situation is that Field Exercises are filled with frustrating pauses and confusing tasks, and the Versus Bots mode, even at the Beginner level, is too difficult for first-time Summoners.


We want Mentor Bots to be a place where new players can experience how much fun it is to play League of Legends, so we've taken the liberty of changing the rules a bit to mitigate potential gameplay frustration. The damage and play level settings for bots have been adjusted so that players who find themselves in an unfamiliar situation have more time to make decisions. We've also reduced the amount of time the player spends dead, so champion deaths are still part of the tutorial, but won't be as frustrating.

The goal must be clear and achievable

Once you understand how to play League of Legends, your goals become clear and understandable. At any moment, you are able to decide on the need for one or another action, be it getting gold, returning to base to improve an item, or joining a team to control an object. Developing the skill of goal setting is the key to the process of improving mastery. But if you have just learned the basics, your knowledge is not enough to make the right decisions. To make training more effective for new recruits, we must give them clear and achievable goals so they can measure their success.


"Field Exercise" is a prime example of failed goal setting: the player is immediately asked to destroy the enemy's outer tower when the first wave of minions has just appeared. In this case, if the player decides to complete the task, he will die from the tower's shots, since he will reach it faster than the minions, while correctly completing the task requires spending several minutes, including waiting for additional waves of minions.

Instead of setting global and often unclear goals, we want to create a system in which the player moves step by step towards success, becoming stronger and stronger. This desire led us to create a system of personal tasks in the “Bots-Mentors” mode. The purpose of personal tasks is to set a goal for the player that is appropriate to achieve at the current moment in time (for example, leaving the battlefield and returning to base), which will allow the novice summoner to feel the rhythm of the game in League of Legends. These tasks are activated by events taking place on the map, so they will always be relevant.

Information must be presented sequentially

Immersing a newbie in a riot of information is not the best idea. In the very first game, everything is new, so there is a risk of mental overload when trying to process too much information, resulting in wasted time with zero results. We solve this problem by breaking the task down into steps: you learn to move, you learn to attack, you learn to cast spells. The last step of this task is to go to the lane and fight with enemy minions or the champion.


By acting carefully, we can present the player with information in a volume that is accessible to assimilation. As an added bonus, the consistent delivery of information allows you to speed up the training process: if you are familiar with the MOBA genre, you will be able to complete training with bot mentors much faster than a real beginner.

We made a decision, due to our desire to build a competent learning process, not to include some game elements in the new mode. We have removed accessories and support items from the list of recommended items because while overview and control of the map is important in the long term, a new player needs to focus on learning other elements of the game first. Players must learn the game from simple to complex. Let's take finishing touches as an example: we believe that new players should approach this element by learning the basics of the game, so the decision to include finishing training or not in the new mode was not easy for us. Trying to teach a new Summoner all the skills of a level 30 player isn't a good idea - it can slow down the learning process, so in the new mode we're focusing on laying the foundation while continuing to look for alternative ways to present advanced level information.

Repetition is the mother of learning

In the current version of the training, players are asked to click the mouse button once to auto-attack and once to use a skill. Muscle memory does not train that quickly, so there are often cases when players find it difficult to use the mouse and hotkeys as intended in their first games.

In the new mode, we've added several practice lessons that we think are incredibly important for learning the basics. Personal quests will remind players of the importance of purchasing items and leveling up skills, as well as the need to return to base, until they begin to do these actions without prompting. For players who are confused about the controls, we have come up with cursors in the form of icons that tell you which mouse button to press to perform the required action. So when players are ready to move on to other game modes, they will have the knowledge they need to avoid feeling lost.

One of the challenges when working on the Mentor Bots mode was to create an environment where neither MOBA veterans nor complete newcomers to League of Legends would experience boredom or frustration.
