Hi all! In this article I will take a general look at the Joomla control panel. Often, for brevity, it is simply called - Joomla admin. I wouldn’t call its interface intuitive, so it’s worth telling which functions are located in which section and what they are responsible for.

The Joomls admin panel is located at http://vash_sayt.ru/administrator. As you can see, you need to add /administrator to the site address.

In Joomla version 2.5, the admin panel looks like this:

1. Main menu. The main functionality of Joomla is concentrated here.

  • Control panel - go to the start page of the admin panel, which we are currently looking at.
  • My profile - your profile settings.
  • General settings - this section contains all the main Joomla settings.
  • Maintenance - unblocking materials and clearing the cache.
  • System information - shows the platform on which PHP runs, database versions, PHP, web server, Joomla itself, database encoding, user browser and some other things.
  • Logout—exits from the admin panel.

Users.

  • User manager - creating/deleting/editing users.
  • User groups - create/delete/edit user groups.
  • Access levels—access level settings.
  • Notes about users - allows you to leave notes about the user so as not to forget something.
  • Note categories - all notes are combined into categories that can be created in this section.
  • Bulk messaging - creating and sending personal messages to groups of users.

In the section settings, you can prohibit/allow the registration of new users, select a group for registering users and for guests, install a captcha, set mass mailing settings and access rights.

Menu.

In this section of the admin panel you can create and delete site menus. For each menu, you need to set the location in the Joomla template you are using and add new items to it. By default, there is only one menu - the main one. It cannot be deleted.

  • Content manager - creating new content for the site. In order for the material to appear on the site page, you need to create a new menu item for it.
  • Category manager - in this section you can create, delete or edit categories to which new site materials are added. By default, there is only one category - Uncategorized.
  • Featured Content - The best content can be added to this section.
  • Media manager - creating new directories on the server and downloading media files from the computer to later use them in created materials.

Out of the box, the following standard components are available:

  • Joomla! Update - the component is used to automatically update Joomla.
  • Banners - allows you to add advertising banners to website pages. In addition, it provides statistics on impressions and clicks for placed banners.
  • Contacts - allows you to create a page with contacts and a feedback form. You can attach a captcha to your feedback using the standard reCAPTCHA plugin to protect against spam.
  • News feeds - displays an RSS news feed from a third-party Internet resource in the content area. Allows you to quickly fill the site with content, but, unfortunately, not unique. In addition, not many people post full articles to the RSS news feed, rather than their announcements.
  • Redirections - setting up a 301 redirect (redirecting from one URL to another).
  • Search - provides analysis of search queries. Works together with the standard search module.
  • Messages - send and read private messages
  • Links - the component allows you to create a structured catalog of external links, which can be displayed on your Internet resource.
  • Smart search is an advanced search, the main feature of which is the stemming function. That is, when you enter part of a word, options for its ending appear. This can be observed when searching on Yandex and Google. Of the minuses: increased load on the server, since in order to implement smart search, site pages must be indexed in advance by this component.

Extensions.

  • Extension Manager - components, modules, plugins, templates and language: all these are extensions. In fact, these are add-ons that extend the functionality of Joomla. The components have too many settings, so they have a separate section in the main menu, but they are also installed through the extension manager.
  • Module manager - modules are displayed in specially designated places of the template (theme) used.
  • Plugin Manager - Plugins add new functionality to Joomla. They are very diverse in their functions.
  • Template manager - the template is responsible for the visual design of the site. Each template defines places for displaying content (material) and modules.
  • Language manager - is responsible for the language used in the Joomla admin panel and on the site itself.

All these tools can be found in the main menu. In fact, these are hotkeys for quickly moving to the desired section of the Joomla admin panel. Using them or finding everything through the main menu is a matter of habit, but I would highlight two icons:

If a new version of Joomla or one of the resolutions used is available, icons notify you of this:

  1. number of users on the site;
  2. number of people in the control panel;
  3. go to personal messages;
  4. go to the website;
  5. Log out of Joomla admin.

4. Statistics for the administrator:

  • Last 5 authorized users - makes sense if the site allows registration. Otherwise, only your user will be displayed.
  • 5 most popular materials - popularity is determined by the number of views.
  • The last 5 created materials - the date of creation and the author of the 5 most recent materials are indicated.

How to properly configure the WordPress admin panel?

Of course, it’s up to you to decide whether to use this method or not. But for most users, it can make working on WordPress more comfortable.

Let's get rid of unnecessary things. As mentioned above, after just a few days of starting to work with WordPress, you need to close the introductory information block “ Welcome to wordpress" You will free up a lot of space, both in the admin panel and on the screen.

We change the location of more important sections. Drag the section " Activity" to the place where it was originally located " Quick draft" Thus, information about new comments will always be in your sight.

Step 3.

5. Comments

Depending on the discussion settings, here you can reject comments, reply to them, edit them if necessary, and also delete or mark them as spam. The default anti-spam system in WordPress is very weak. If you plan to have a large flow of comments, you will have to use third-party protection tools. The WordPress customizer allows you to set some site parameters and customize the display of some elements: background, logo, icons, etc. The level of customization depends on the capabilities of the active theme. For example, free themes most often have the minimum number of settings, while commercial ones allow you to customize almost any element.

Widgets

It’s now very difficult to find a WordPress theme that doesn’t support dynamic widgets, but not long ago there were a majority of them. Widgets allow you to display various useful elements: calendar, search form, tags, categories, comments and much more. The list of available widgets is expanded with the help of plugins. Depending on the theme’s capabilities, widgets can be placed in sidebars, footers, and other designated areas of the site. Again, I note that free themes most often have one or two blocks for placing widgets, while commercial ones have a dozen or even more.

Menu

WordPress by default has a very convenient navigation menu management system. As with widgets, the number of navigation blocks depends entirely on the capabilities of the theme you are using. There may be several of them, but in free themes there is rarely more than one.

The theme editor allows you to make changes directly to its code. I would not recommend beginners to change anything in these files. And advanced users need to remember that if a stock theme is used, it will sooner or later receive an update and all changes made will be lost. Therefore, in these cases there is nothing better child themes(child themes). All changes in them will be saved even after updating the main theme. It should be noted that the web theme code editor is a huge security hole in the site. It’s better to disable it altogether and use secure connections via secure SSH and SFTP protocols for editing.

7. Plugins

Reading

Everyone customizes reading settings for themselves. For blogs, you can leave the default settings. But for ordinary sites it would be logical to display some kind of static page on the main page. It’s also worth paying attention to the checkbox “ Ask search engines not to index the site" Don’t forget to remove it if you turned it on while the site was being developed. During the work, I would rather use some kind of information plug instead. Which would be much more useful. And after launch, you wouldn’t have to wait for search spiders to return to the site again.

Discussion

Discussion settings directly depend on the site’s information policy and the degree of interest in spambots. Discussions can be closed to all new entries, time limits on comments can be set, full pre-moderation, mandatory registration, or previously approved comments can be set. If comments are generated at a high speed, it would be wise to move the discussions to some third-party service or social networks. This will significantly reduce the load on the server.

Media files

When uploading images, WordPress automatically generates several versions: large, average And miniature. This is done so that developers can use images in themes more optimally and efficiently. In the media file settings, you can set all sizes, as well as specify how they will be stored. Typically, standard values ​​are used.

Each admin panel is unique. If you've been working with WordPress your whole life, you won't be able to switch to ShopScript or MODx instantly. There are some things in common in the admin panels, but some things are fundamentally different. In any case, you will have to study each admin panel. But if you have the skills to work with at least one of them, then this process will be easier.

Admin panels also have their own gradation of complexity. For example, Joomla, DLE, and WordPress are considered “light” admin systems. Medium difficulty - MODx. Increased complexity - 1C Bitrix, Drupal.

As we can see from the example, the site admin panel is an important management tool, without which not a single reputable resource can currently do. And with a competent and skillful approach, the admin panel can be configured so that your website turns into a reliable spaceship, confidently cruising across the Internet.
