The Warhammer 40,000 universe relates to the rest of science fiction in much the same way as porn relates to the work of Jane Austen. The heroes here usually get straight to the point, and short and straightforward preludes like a planet emerging from the Warp every five thousand years cannot be interpreted in two ways. You are always sure that you will get what you came for - three-meter men in an epic battle with unimaginable evil. In this sense, the release of Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War 3 is something of a New York porn festival. This is a holiday where fans of the genre will undoubtedly find stories with their favorite characters, and the canons are respected so as not to cause discomfort among the heated audience, but there are also plenty of piquant innovations borrowed here and there.

The previous parts were in many ways similar to Company of Heroes: the behavior of military equipment and infantry, the way sectors covered by machine guns or the radius of destruction of mortars formed a very complex picture of the battle, when literally one step to the side could lead to tragic consequences. In DoW 3 things are a little different. Here, the main characters are “elite” units - unique heroes from the story campaign, each of which has its own set of active abilities and so-called “doctrines” that give new abilities to some units or bonuses to the entire army at once. Heroes scatter entire squads with one blow, shield the army from heavy fire with force fields, and the rest of the units are left to be content with supporting roles - capture points, tie up the enemy in battle and die. The battlefield is still controlled by ordinary troops, they are the ones who form the front line, and you have to pay a considerable price for bringing heroes into battle - but the story of each battle still unfolds around them.

It’s a special pleasure to simply own elite units. You unlock them one by one, and then, as you gain experience, you gain new abilities and doctrines, building your entire multiplayer strategy around them. Finally, when in a game with a live opponent the plan works and you get an elite unit onto the field on time, it feels like a real reward. Lady Solaria, a cyclopean-sized combat robot, clearing the screen of all living things, spewing flames from two white-hot blocks of barrels, while rockets soar upward from its scruff - such a shameless, delightful, excessive display of power that the game is worth buying, playing through and studying perfectly only for it.

More than once the opinion has been voiced that the developers of DoW 3 are in this way dangerously bringing the game closer to a MOBA - but this is not so. The game quickly makes it clear that the army, base building and heroes are equal elements, and you must control all three of these aspects to succeed. The debate about whether this is right or wrong has no basis. The lore of Warhammer 40,000 is full of examples of epic battles like in the first part (chronicles from army codes and rule books), adventures of a group of heroes from DoW 2 (say, a series about Eisenhorn or Ahriman), and books where key characters change the outcome of battles like in DoW 3 is perhaps the most numerous category. So, if the innovations cause slight disorientation, I’m sure that over time we will get used to them and, quite possibly, we will perceive Dawn of War 3 as the most authentic of all the games in the series. That's the beauty of it - the better you understand the game, the richer the story it will tell you.

Don't get me wrong, DoW 3 has other advantages. The most obvious of these is the story campaign. It starts with the almost anecdotal “the seer of the Eldar, the master of the Space Marine order and the warboss of the Orcs meet near a planet that has emerged from the Warp” - for Warhammer 40,000 the situation is so common that you can’t even call it a cliché. But after a couple of missions, when the exposition ends, we get a completely interesting story with betrayals, unexpected alliances and terrible discoveries that are both exciting and leave that warm feeling - like when you watch your favorite movie in which you know every line. In our case, this is a sure indicator that the game creators understand the Warhammer 40,000 lore correctly. Moreover, in DoW 3 we again meet with the Order of the Bloody Ravens, led by an old acquaintance, the gray-haired Gabriel Angelos, who will have to clarify relations with the leader of the Eldar Masha (spelled “Macha”, and I refuse to call her anything else), the inquisitor chief and the million orcs.

The best part is that DoW 3 is a good enough game that we can talk about expectations associated with it. It’s a strange formulation regarding one of the main strategies of the year, but don’t get me wrong - statistics in recent years speak in favor of the fact that it’s better not to pin hopes on Warhammer 40,000 games. So, Dawn of War 3 only at the start gives us three completely different armies that work: the Space Marines are built around the application of firepower, the Orcs prefer to grab the enemy by the belt and remain in close combat, the Eldar are a mobile army that teleports across the battlefield through the system goal and strikes where they are not expected. That being said, each of the armies can be constructed around different heroes and doctrines, and God the Emperor knows what strategic wealth we will gain from multiplying the countless metagames of MOBAs with the depth of a true strategy game.

So Dawn of War 3 has everything to pass the test of the future - from an addictive plot to multiplayer, which, thanks to its mechanics, is very unpredictable. We hope that the game will gather enough fans, and the developers will be as generous with additions as during the first part of the series.

Recently, perhaps the most atmospheric and large-scale addition to the game was released - Operation "Pripyat". With him the game is very reminiscent of the cult S.T.A.L.K.E.R. For fans of “Stalker” this is a wonderful gift and a reason to try yourself in Warface, because Pripyat is fascinating!

Welcome to Pripyat

The developers created an update "Chernobyl" more than a year. To achieve realism and convey the atmosphere, they took the time to go to Pripyat and study every nook and cranny in detail. Places that were significant to Stalker fans were recreated in Warface with understanding and love. The frozen Ferris wheel, the high school and the Lazurny swimming pool are where they should be. The Crytek engine brings the environment to life with excellent play of light and smooth shadows. It is better to undergo the operation on a powerful machine with the graphics turned up to maximum - for complete immersion in the world.

The old city in the game is decorated with little things like tattered Soviet posters, furniture and household items of that time. The grey-marshy color palette intensifies the horror and immerses you in a mystical atmosphere, and the fast dynamics of the operation do not in the least interfere with admiring the detailed landscapes of the dead city. If S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 and it will be released someday, then the game should look like this.

Shoot, work as a team and shoot again

The special operation is quite intensive and long. The creators say that Chernobyl is just the starting point for a series of similar large-scale story updates (yes, Warface has a story). The essence of the new mission is extremely simple: you need to move forward, constantly shooting enemies. From the moment of landing until the very end, the team is constantly attacked by new types of mutants and fighters of the Blackwood organization with its drones, automatic turrets and armored personnel carrier 3000 with powerful weapons on board.

The famous Ferris wheel is one of the symbols of Pripyat. He is well remembered by fans of the first Modern Warfare for one of the missions.

The enemies, unfortunately, have not wised up. Whether soldiers or freshly made armored opponents “SED” and drones “Medusa” are equally stupid at all difficulty levels, this is a common thing for a shareware MMOFPS. The enemies are overwhelming and even at a low level of difficulty they rush ahead and seem to create problems, trying to eliminate the fighters of the Warface squad.

Together with the team you need to constantly move forward. Battles take place in buildings, in courtyards, on outposts and on rooftops. The dynamism is set by a fast pace, but ideal for immersing yourself in the atmosphere of Pripyat. Soldiers fire from above and below, mutants quickly attack, turrets and combat vehicles try to grind the squad into powder. To survive, you need to be completely focused and be ready to attack from the most unexpected places. Just have time to hand out headshots and throw grenades.

For the sake of one hundred percent success of the operation, one must adhere to simple tactics - shoot quickly and accurately. You can try yourself as a sniper and take a tactical approach to things, but it is not as effective as the old school onslaught. Another option is to learn to function effectively as a team player. The more coordinated the actions are, the more effectively the fighters will be able to complete the task.

New weapons and other extras

Each Warface update adds new weapons, skins, achievements and uniform items to the game. Each operation rewards the player with something pleasant and motivating to play WF as often as possible.

Operation Pripyat has twenty new unique achievements, eight of which are secret and with unknown conditions for completion. Achievements can only be obtained with weapons from the “Radiation” series. Some of the achievements are very difficult to obtain, such as killing the final boss of Mantis on Pro difficulty. Not only is the flying machine as furious as a fury, but enemy soldiers are constantly attacking the location. A real hardcore test.

For completing a special operation, fighters are awarded with special “Radiation” skins for regular guns and exclusive barrels. Camouflages are available forever. New weapons, unfortunately, for a while. The camouflages themselves repaint the guns iridescent green. For a new look, the player, as always, receives new stripes. In terms of bonuses and amenities, Warface remains true to its traditions.

Operation Pripyat is a good development of Warface ideas and an excellent gift for players who are partial to the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. franchise. The developers are clearly flirting with them. Shooter fans will be able to do some more fighting in one of the most mysterious and atmospheric places on the planet. I like it!

New opponents

Other changes

  • PvP: "Detonation": a bomb can now be thrown on the ground (by default - the "B" key) to be picked up by another team member.
  • Now, when the battle begins, characters appear immediately with weapons in their hands, without drawing animation.
  • Sound: the sound of some guns has been improved: Tavor TAR-21, H&K G36K, Type 97, Galil AR.
  • Quickly moving the mouse in different directions immediately after starting a slide no longer ends the slide early.
  • Slightly improved the auto-balance of teams before the start of the battle.
  • PvP: "Battle Royale": leaving the match after dying is no longer counted in the defeat statistics.

Error correction

  • Interface: The images on the 10th and 100th place tokens in Battle Royale mode have been swapped.

  • PvP: "Battle Royale": "Mojave": in some cases, the music did not start playing at the beginning of the battle.
  • PvP: "Demolition": "Bridges 2.0": the situation in which it was impossible to climb into one of the windows has been fixed.
  • PvP: "Demolition": "Bridges 2.0": some visual artifacts have been fixed.
  • PvP: "Detonation": "Bridges 2.0": the character is no longer teleported back when jumping from the window of a building near detonation point 2.
  • PvP: "Survival": "Desert": textures were missing in some places.

Known Bugs

  • Progress toward "The Nightmare Before Christmas" has been updated and must be completed again. Killing enemies with weapons of the new "Shine" series is taken into account in the statistics of this achievement.
