  2. Any other baits with flavorings are less effective; it is better if they contain pheromones. But it’s most effective to use new 2016 — !
  3. Learning different fishing techniques. For example, it is written about spinning wires.

Main manufacturers

Korea

Company N.S. Black Hole Industrial Co. LTD , with its Korean spinning reels, has become popular among anglers who prefer spinning fishing, as it offers quality products that combine an affordable price with the use of modern technologies. On the Russian market since 2002.

Banax . At first, in 1973, it was called Bando Sports Ltd and was a joint venture with Daiwa. Already at the Bando Sports stage, the company's products were different high quality and large assortment fishing products for various methods and conditions of fishing. In 1996, Bando became part of another South Korean company, Lucky Goldstar.

The name Banax was made up of the initial letters of the following words: Bando (2 letters), nature (2), science (the first letter, which was then replaced by X).

China

Siweida . Produces various products for fishing. The quality of the company's products is controlled first in China, then in Russia, so Chinese reels take pride of place among fishermen. High quality, budget price.

Russia

Aqua
. 1988 is the year when fishing products, wobblers, with the Aqua brand appeared on the market. This product corresponded international quality standards, but had a budget cost compared to foreign analogues. In the second half of the 90s, the company began producing products for ice fishing. Since 1996, the Russian company has been cooperating with foreign partners (Siweida, Gamakatsu and many others).

2000s - participation in international exhibitions fishing products, organization of production of baits, fishing lines, gear, reels and fishing clothing at enterprises around the world.

Aiko . Russian-Korean company. Year of foundation - 2007.

Taiwan

Okuma - one of the leaders in the world of spinning reel manufacturers. Okuma is a priority new and high quality. Modern technologies are used in the manufacture of equipment. The quality of goods is controlled at all production stages.

Japan

Shimano . The corporation is a world leader in the creation of fishing products. The production of Japanese reels began in 1970. Owns the PowerPro and G.Loomis brands.

Daiwa . Anglers all over the world are familiar with with excellent quality Daiwa spinning reels. The first sample was created in 1955, after which the company became a trendsetter in the production of spinning reels. Experts assessing the quality of models are multiple winners of national fishing championships. Daiwa engineers follow their advice when developing new reel models.

Ryobi . The company has existed since 1943. At first, she was engaged only in the production of car parts. Then it was added to the creation of printing equipment and power tools for construction. The production of fishing reels began in the second half of the 70s. By this period, the company had already accumulated great experience in the field of metal processing, and the designers were highly qualified. Ryobi reels immediately made a big impression on Japanese anglers, especially Ryobi Dynaflight. In the 80s, the Ryobi brand became a serious competitor to Daiwa and Shimano, whose activity was only the creation of fishing products. But the company prioritized other areas of production, as a result of which the fishing industry in the 90s it sharply lost its gained positions.

In the 2000s, the production of fishing products was sold to Johshuya Co. (Japan). No rebranding was done due to the promotion of the Ryobi brand.

The top rating we provided was created based on reviews from spinners about the quality of reels from different brands. We hope that it will help novice anglers navigate the wide variety of reels and purchase a truly high-quality model.

And if your favorite reel is out of order and you plan to fix it yourself, then this will come in handy!

Video on how and which one to choose for a spinning rod and a small rating from an expert.

Spinning fishing is fundamentally different from other types of fishing, since its result depends on the skills of the spinning operator, as well as on the elements of the gear. The effect of fishing depends on how correctly all the elements of the gear are selected. This is the only way to get maximum pleasure from fishing, otherwise you can expect a lot of problems and only inconveniences. The whole point is that the spinning angler makes a lot of casts, and he travels long distances in search of fish, and this puts stress on both his arms and other muscles. At the same time, it is worth paying attention to both the spinning rod itself and the reel with fishing line, as well as the bait. If they all meet all the requirements, then the spinning rod will work absolutely flawlessly, and most importantly, it will catch fish.

All elements of the tackle are important, but the most critical component is the reel. Why? Everything is very simple. The coil is designed to perform certain functions. Its design is quite complex, since it has to convert the translational movement of the fishing line into a rotational movement to wind it onto the spool. The outcome of all fishing depends on the reliability of this mechanism. Therefore, it is very important to choose the right reel so that it works quietly and without jerking. This is especially true for beginner spinning anglers who are just beginning to master the technique of spinning fishing.

3 types of reels that are currently known to spinning anglers are widely used. These are coils such as:

Inertial

Although this type of reel is considered outdated, some spinning anglers still use them for jig fishing. They explain this by the fact that inertial reels make the tackle more sensitive, which makes it possible to detect bites in a timely manner. While retrieving, spinners fix the line with their fingers, so they immediately feel bites. Of course, inertial reels have one, but significant drawback: it spins by inertia even when the bait is at a given point. Therefore, the spinning player’s task is to stop its rotation in time. If this is not done, the fishing line can easily become tangled, and the fishing may end there. Fishing with this reel requires special skill.

Inertialess

They are very popular among fishermen because they are installed both on spinning rods and on other fishing gear. Its use does not require special practice: after the first casts, it is possible to master the casting technique and carry out various types of castings. These types of reels are produced for different fishing conditions, in different sizes and using different materials. The spinning reel is very easy to use. Before casting, you need to fold back the line handler bracket and press the line to the rod with your index finger (fix it). After this, the bait is cast. When the rod is at a certain point (somewhere at an angle of 45 degrees), the line is released, after which it begins to unwind from the spool under the influence of the weight of the bait and the acceleration given to it. The greater the weight of the bait, the further it can be cast. When the bait hits the water, the line-layer bracket is returned to its original position. After this, wiring is carried out. The spinner, by rotating the handle, begins to wind the line onto the spool, and the line layer allows you to do this carefully.

Multiplier

Such reels are also called saltwater reels because they are designed for catching large fish. These are quite powerful reels with a long casting range and line reeling speed. Recently, experienced spinners have increasingly begun to install them on spinning rods. To what extent this is correct is up to them to decide. But this type of reel also requires experience and is not suitable for beginners. When you master wiring techniques, you don’t have to have a cool, expensive reel.

To choose the right spinning reel, you need to know what characteristics they have.

If you take experienced fishermen, then they already know which reel should be selected for specific fishing conditions, but for beginners this can be a real problem. As a rule, they do not understand why their spinning rod does not catch fish. Without any experience, they choose a reel at their own discretion, often without paying attention to its characteristics: they think that the more expensive the reel, the better it is.

When choosing a spinning reel, you should pay attention to:

  • For smoothness and ease of rotation of the mechanism.
  • The size of the spool, depending on the fishing conditions.
  • The weight of the reel, since you have to hold the tackle in your hands all the time.
  • On the fishing line laying mechanism, which determines the quality and distance of casting.
  • The material of manufacture, which determines the durability of the product.
  • For the presence of a friction brake.
  • On the shape and method of attaching the handle.
  • On the line handle.

Such characteristics have a serious impact on the outcome of fishing, as it allows you to easily and correctly control the bait and evenly lay the line on the spool. Incorrect laying creates problems during fishing, since the line may become tangled during casting, and this will not make it possible to cast the bait far and accurately, which is important.

The spool mechanism during operation should not create extraneous noise, as it is transmitted along the fishing line to the bait and can alert the fish. The smoothness of the spool is also important, so you must check it by running your finger along its side. If there are even the slightest nicks, it is better not to buy such a reel.

The size of the spool depends on the size of the reel and vice versa. The size of the reel indicates its ability to withstand certain types of loads: the larger the reel, the more power it has, which means it can catch bigger fish. Each reel indicates how much fishing line and how thick it can fit on the spool. The size of the reel is marked with the numbers 1000, 2000, 3000, etc. At the same time, you can easily determine, even by these numbers, how much and what kind of fishing line fits on the reel. For example: a reel with the designation 3000 holds 100 meters of fishing line, 0.3 mm thick, or 300 meters - 0.1 mm thick.

To catch small predatory fish, for example, perch, it is enough to have a reel with the designation 1000-2500. You just need to choose quality reels. Reel sizes from 3000 to 5000 are more suitable for difficult fishing conditions when you have to catch large fish. Larger reels are rarely used, since larger fish are found in the seas and oceans.

Reel weight

The weight of the reel plays a very important role, since the spinner has to hold the rod in his hands all the time. The lighter the reel, the less stress on your hands, which means more comfortable fishing. But here, as they say, there are pitfalls. The lighter the coil, the weaker it is, since such a coil is made from lightweight, non-durable materials. But if the material is light but durable, then such a reel can cost a lot of money. For non-professionals, this is a fundamental question, since sometimes fishing turns into a rather expensive hobby. As for professionals, they prefer lightweight, expensive, branded reels so that they do not fail at the most decisive moment. For amateurs, this is the golden mean: a cheap one should not be taken for reasons of principle, but an expensive one is simply not needed.

Line laying mechanism

Spinning reels can have one of two line laying mechanisms: with an endless screw or with a slide.

Both mechanisms, made with high quality, allow you to lay the line evenly, without the formation of grooves and humps.

There are 2 types of line winding: straight and cross. Straight-line winding provides a tight and even lay, while the spool holds more line. But this winding has its drawback: adjacent turns often cling to each other, which affects the casting quality.

Cross-winding does not have this disadvantage, but the spool holds less fishing line.

In addition, straight winding can be cylindrical, in the form of a direct and reverse cone. With the cylindrical method, the cord is laid parallel to the spool, and in the case of a reverse and straight cone - at a certain angle.

Material for manufacturing the main elements

The material used affects the quality and durability of the structure. Inexpensive reels are mostly made from the same inexpensive and low-quality materials. As a result of active use of the spinning rod, such a reel will last for two seasons, but if you don’t get to go fishing often, then it simply doesn’t make sense to buy a serious reel.

Expensive reels are made from lightweight but durable alloys such as titanium, aluminum, bronze, brass and durable polymers. As a rule, such products last a long time, and the operation of the mechanism is uniform, easy, without extraneous sounds, but they also cost accordingly.

A friction brake is an element that is present in almost all reel designs, but spinning anglers do not always use it, since it is not always possible to catch big fish. Moreover, it can be front or rear.

It is believed that the front clutch operates smoother and is more sensitive compared to the rear clutch, but the rear clutch is more convenient to adjust. In addition, a reel with a rear clutch is easily repaired and can be easily replaced with a new one, along with the spool.

The operation of the friction brake is assessed by the smoothness of the line release.

The shape of the handle in the reel can be any, since this factor does not have a special impact on the fishing process. Despite this, designers are always working on the external shape of the handle. At the same time, it can be attached in various ways, for example:

  • The handle can simply be screwed into the reel frame.
  • Can be secured with a screw.
  • Can be secured with a rivet.

Any type of fastening has its advantages and disadvantages, but this does not affect the fishing process in any way. If the handle is attached with a screw or screwed in, then it is better to pay attention to the size of the thread: threads that are too small will wear out quickly, as they can be easily torn off.

There are no special requirements for its design, since its task is to ensure correct winding of the fishing line (or rather, it should ensure that the fishing line accurately hits the roller) and correct blocking, and clear opening and fixation. When buying a reel, it is better to inspect the line handler for the presence of burrs. Burrs significantly affect the durability and strength of the fishing line.

In addition to the basic data, there are other indicators that you should pay attention to. For example, the gear ratio, which indicates the number of revolutions of the spool with one turn of the handle. Based on this feature, coils are divided into three types:

  • Power. With a gear ratio of about 4.0-4.7.
  • Universal. With a number of revolutions from 5.0 to 5.5.
  • Express, providing a number of revolutions in the range of 6.0-7.2.

This factor should be paid attention to if fishing conditions are far from optimal. As a rule, power reels are designed for catching large fish, while high-speed reels are more suitable for ultralight spinning rods.

Spinning reels, rating of models - this is an important topic, without a review of which it will be difficult for a novice spinning angler to navigate the variety of spinning reels present on the fishing market today. The quality of work and the balance of the tackle as a whole depend on the correctly selected reel. This means that this issue needs to be taken seriously.

There are quite a lot of criteria for choosing coils. The main ones that can be highlighted are:

  • Fishing method and bait used.
  • Fishing conditions in which the gear will be used.
  • Quality workmanship and manufacturer.
  • Reel cost.

These are the main questions that an angler must answer when choosing a spinning reel for spinning fishing. Multipliers will be discussed in another article; read how to choose a multiplier.

What kind of spinning reel should be

Before presenting the rating of spinning reels, you need to understand which products you should pay attention to first. Today, the best manufacturers of spinning wheels are the famous Japanese companies Shimano and Daiwa. They are considered the standard of quality.

Some models are very expensive and only a few can afford them. There are a lot of mid-budget and budget reels in the range that are designed for the simple fisherman. If possible, you should definitely try to buy yourself a reel from Daiwa or Shimano.

In addition to these Japanese manufacturers, we can also mention others whose reels have been on the market for quite a long time and some models have become popular, which is why they are included in our top 10 spinning reels. These are the famous Ryobi, Salmo, Okuma and Kosadaka.

When choosing a spinning reel for spinning fishing, you must pay attention to the quality of workmanship. Of course, fishermen’s reviews about this or that inertia-free model are also important. There is a detailed article about what to look for and how to choose a reel.

Top 10 spinning reels

So, let's go directly to the review of the best products at the moment. This rating of spinning reels includes models from the expensive, mid-range, and budget segments in order to cover the entire range of spinning reels presented in fishing stores.

No. 1. Daiwa Emeraldas

Our rating includes the most expensive spinning reel from a well-known Japanese company. Belongs to the elite class and is a modified continuation of the Ignis series. Today, Daiwa Emeraldas is popular, first of all, among professional fishermen, who value it for the highest quality and reliability.

This reel model is made using the most advanced innovative technologies from modern materials. The Emeraldas series mainly contains models for light and ultra-light fishing. Can be used for trout fishing, hunting for chub, perch, grayling, lenok, asp and pike.

No. 2. Shimano Twin Power

Also an elite class model from another famous manufacturer. This spinning reel periodically undergoes various modifications and is released in new series with improved characteristics. Today, the best is considered to be Twin Power 15 - the 2015 model, which has absorbed all the best developments of Shimano engineers.

This inertia-free product is available in a wide range of sizes. It can be used for ultralight and light, for jigging and twitching, for fishing with spaced rigs and in other spinning directions. Its distinctive feature is the ideal laying of the cord on any jerk wiring. Thanks to this, the thinnest braids can be wound onto its spool. .

No. 3. Daiwa Freams

The reel is from the middle price segment. It is often chosen by many advanced spinning players who know a lot about reels. At its reasonable cost, it is endowed with good performance characteristics. Daiwa Freams are reliable, powerful and durable, durable and long lasting.

In the series of these spinning reels there are models for light spinning and for “adult” fishing methods. Daiwa Freams performed well in jigging and twitching thanks to its traction performance and good line laying.

No. 4. Daiwa Revros

This reel can be classified as the upper level of the budget segment. Positioned as universal, suitable for various spinning directions. We can note the ergonomic design, ease of movement, and low weight. The line lay is not bad, but it is inferior to more expensive models, so with thin cords and when fishing with jerk baits, loops may occasionally drop. Read the full reel review.

The Daiwa Revros series includes reels for fishing with “adult” spinning rods and lightweight models. It is used in microjig, spaced rigs, fishing with spoons and spinners, as well as jigging methods.

No. 5. Shimano Nasci

This model has gained the greatest popularity among those who like to fish with light lures. For the last five years, Shimano Nasci has been considered the basic reel for beginners in ultralight. Its low cost and excellent performance put it in first place among budget spinning reels for light spinning rods.

Available with classic and small-profile spool. It moves smoothly, lays thin cords well, and does not play. The reliability and strength of the reel has been tested during multiple active fishing seasons. .

No. 6. Ryobi Excia

No. 7. Ryobi Ecusima

It’s not without reason that you can start considering budget reels for spinning rods with this model. Ryobi Ecusima is a simplified version of the Zauber model, which, along with the Ryobi Excia discussed above, is quite popular among spinners. This inertia-free rod is designed for beginners who are just starting to master spinning fishing. It lays the braid well, has a smooth ride and is relatively light in weight.

No. 8. Kosadaka Blaze

Another inexpensive, inertia-free economy class car. The reel has no bells and whistles and is simple and reliable. Excellent for fishing with spoons, spinners and silicone baits. This model is not very suitable for jerk baits and thin braided cords, since it does not lay the line so well and evenly and can periodically throw loops.

Kosadaka Blaze is cheap, so this reel can not be particularly taken care of and can be used in difficult conditions. Despite this, it is durable and reliable, capable of working for several full fishing seasons with such operation.

No. 9. Okuma Ceymar

A new budget reel from a well-known Chinese manufacturer. Surprisingly, this model turned out to be quite light, since it is made of aluminum alloy and plastic. It has a nice design and good performance for its price. Okuma Ceymar is suitable for beginners and those who, for a number of reasons, rarely go to the pond with a spinning rod.

No. 10. Salmo Diamond Leader

Another well-known manufacturer that produces gear that is accessible to most. Salmo Diamond Leader is the only spinning reel with a rear drag presented in our top 10. This model is considered universal and can be used in a light feeder and picker, as well as in various spinning directions.

Of course, with this inertia-free action it is not so convenient to fish with twitching or jig, since there are more preferable options for such fishing. But for rotating spinners, spinners, crank wobblers and silicone baits mounted on classic jig heads, the Salmo Diamond Leader is quite suitable.

What reel do you use? Tell us in the comments.

The bow must be securely locked in the open position! If not, this risks frequent shooting of baits when the bow closes during casting. This is easy to check - open the bail and shake the reel sharply, simulating casting. If the bow closes, it is better to put this coil aside.

B.M. From my point of view, there is not much difference - a hollow line handle, thin or standard. There are not very successful examples of coils with a thin wire bow, although perhaps these are unsuccessful models in general. Their fishing line remains on the bow, without jumping off onto the roller. This, for example, was the problem with 2 copies of the same Twin thousandth. I didn't have such problems with hollow temples.

4. LINE PLAYER ROLLER

B.M. Let us dwell especially on the type of line roller block. Almost all modern reels have a tapered roller block - this is good, especially when it is made with high quality. In any case, the line does not get stuck at the “shackle-roller” transition point.

P.A. What kind of rollers are not installed on fishing reels these days! There are a lot of variations in sizes, shapes, and, of course, names. And every company claims that their video is the best! How to choose from such a variety? What to do? Nothing, I can say absolutely seriously that this is not that important.

Statements that the roller does not twist the line are absurd, they twist everything! Much more important is a smooth transition from the line handle to the roller. Without “burrs” and sharp bends and grooves. Many, even very expensive models, are guilty of this. The fact is that a soft, braided, especially thin cord may simply not get onto the roller, lingering on one of the protrusions. If you notice, that’s good, but it’s impossible to adjust the line with your hands after every cast. If you haven’t noticed, the braid will rub the groove in this place, which will only worsen the situation.

F.M. Let's look at the line roller. This is an important part along which the fishing line is wound. The main forms of the roller are universal and for fishing with braided cord. The roller must rotate even with a light touch, otherwise the line will fray it. For better rotation, a ball bearing is often installed inside the roller.

On some reels, there may be cases when the fishing line (usually the cord) does not reach the roller and begins to cut through the bow. Unfortunately, it is impossible to check this in the store. If you notice this after your first fishing trip, immediately return the reel to the store!

5. WINDING EVENNESS

P.A. The profile of the fishing line wound on the spool should be as smooth as possible, without bumps or dips. Otherwise, you will have to reel in the lines, leaving 1 mm or more of spikes to the side, and at long distances this will shorten the casting slightly.

Nowadays, completely different systems are used in laying fishing line: so-called “endless screws”, crank mechanisms, and Rioby uses RFO, etc. From the point of view of winding evenness, it is not so important which one is on your reel. Still, the most guaranteed way is to trust only yourself, winding the fishing line onto the spool and visually assessing the quality of the winding.

S.O. A very important parameter, especially when fishing with the thinnest fishing lines and cords. The line should lie flat on the spool, without dips or bumps!

Uneven winding shortens the cast, sometimes significantly. This leads to the formation of loops: You risk tangling the fishing line into a large ball, ruining your fishing. This problem sometimes occurs with expensive reels. You can determine this already in the store. Bring some old fishing line with you and ask the seller to help you wind it onto the reel, everything will become clear right away.

It is good if the reel is equipped with an “endless screw” or another winding system, in which the line does not lie turn to turn, but at an angle - the so-called cross winding. This winding prevents the upper turns from falling under the lower ones when fishing with poppers and other baits that require a sharp jerk.

B.M. The presence of an “endless screw” (worm) or a “planetary” system (S-shaped groove). For me there is no difference. All my reels in recent years have been wound smoothly and there have been no problems with dropping loops. More precisely, loops inevitably form with uneven wiring, but they form on any coils.

6. REEL WEIGHT

P.A. This parameter was discussed in the first section. The idea is simple: the lighter the coil, the more sensitive it is. It is undesirable to use plastic gears - this “dulls” the reel. Much better are gears made from various alloys, for example, from the well-known aluminum-based alloy - MGS.

F.M. Quite a controversial indicator. Of course, most people want the reel to be light, but is it necessary? First, everything inside the coil must be metal (gears, for example). All that can lighten a reel is the body and the spool.

As I said earlier, for casting it is better to have a metal spool, which means that the weight of the reel can only be reduced due to the weight of the body. The plastic body is obviously lighter. But, for example, I like metal more, simply because of the appearance.

B.M. We often hear questions about the material of the reel body - “metal or plastic”. This is not a fundamental question. Metal, although it has greater strength, does not particularly affect the operation of the coil. But the weight of the reel immediately increases.

The strength of the hull may only be needed by those who often fish on rocky rivers from the bank or by wading, that is, in situations where there is a high probability of the fisherman or the equipment falling.

The weight of the reel is important, especially if you are casting. For ultralight fishing, it is better to choose a reel with a plastic body rather than a metal one. Of course, this is if you are not ready to shell out two and a half to three hundred green money. And if you are ready, you are welcome to reels made of lightweight alloys.

Somehow, in my practice of using reels, it turned out that the heavier the reel, the less it deteriorates over time.

Lightweight, expensive Shimano or Daiva work great at first, but then play and other problems appear. While the heavy, iron Twin continues to work as before. And even a cheap Sauber works.…

But you have to choose, so for an ultralight you don’t buy anything else but an expensive, lightweight reel. Therefore, you need to decide for yourself how critical the mass of the coil is for you.

7. HANDLE

B.M. An important detail is the handle folding system.

The worst is when the handle is inserted into the reel with a hexagon, and a fastening screw is screwed into the hexagon from the reverse side. The thread is thin and will fail quickly.

The most convenient is the push-button type, where the button is located on the back of the handle. It's a little worse when the button is on the side. Although I do not rule out that this depends more on the material of the push-button system itself.

In any case, of my dozen and a half reels with these systems, the reels with the bottom button, rather than with the side, wore out less.

The most reliable system is a screw-in handle (as on Shimano Twin Power). On the other hand, even the worst system will last 2-3 years, but my coils somehow didn’t last longer. Although, on a bad system, the backlash at the end of its service life began to irritate...

8. FRICTION

B.M. Smoothness and operation of the clutch. For the last five years I have not bought or traded reels that had any problems with the clutch. Even on the cheapest reels (50 - 70 USD - retail price), the drag made it possible to adjust to the thinnest fishing lines and worked successfully at increased loads.

P.A. Today, all more or less good reels (from $100) are equipped with quite tolerable clutches, which allow very fine adjustments, even with minimal loads - a tribute to ultralight! In addition, many reels are equipped, simply put, with a “foolproof system”.

The essence of the innovation is this: no matter how hard you tighten the brake nut, you still won’t be able to tighten it tightly. Or rather it will work out, but only a nut! The brake will still continue to release the line, which will prevent deformation of the mechanism.

The maximum load level for each reel model is different, so when purchasing, you should ask the seller about the power of the clutch. As for the type of clutch itself - there is a front one, there is a rear one.

My advice: if you still want to use the brake, and not constantly fish with it tightly tightened, forget that there are reels with a rear clutch! On the vast majority of models it is simply disgusting!

ADVIСE

A spare spool is required. If not included, ask if they are sold separately. The spool for the cord should preferably be metal, without burrs or scratches. Place the reel on the spinning rod and see how comfortable it is for you to work with it, and whether the reel leg is too low for your hand. Don’t forget to ask your friends or on the Internet about the specific model you like. Ask the store about the warranty. Unlike a spinning rod, quality is more important in a reel. If you buy it for 200 - 300 dollars, then with careful use it will serve you for quite a long time (4 - 5 years). But you can pick up a reel for 500 - 1500 rubles. The main thing is, try to check it in the store according to the listed indicators, and it will reliably serve for several years.

Hello, dear readers of my fishing blog. It’s been a while since I pleased you with all sorts of tricks and wisdom. But today I’m correcting myself and publishing a wonderful article on how to choose a spinning reel. Nowadays, don’t go into any fishing store and your eyes will simply run wild from the selection of reels. Different colors, shapes, sizes and materials of manufacture. Different prices after all. How can you not get confused among this abundance of choice and actually buy a quality item?

How to choose a spinning reel? It would seem that the more expensive the better. In the fairy tale “About the priest and his worker Balda” it is said “.. if you priest would not chase after cheap things...”. However, not everything that is most expensive is always of the highest quality. Moreover, the reel must be selected correctly and for suitable conditions, otherwise it will suffer from overload.

In this article we will take a detailed look at the main parameters of reels that you need to pay attention to when choosing, and also show the rating of the most popular reels, in particular from Daiwa and Shimano.

Types of spinning reels:

  • Inertial
  • Inertialess
  • Multiplier

Also, from the whole variety of spinning reels, we can distinguish special designs intended only for certain fishing conditions.

Firstly, these are ultralight coils. They are designed to work with baits weighing only up to 14 grams. Their main advantage is their low dead weight and a precisely calibrated mechanism for thin fishing line, which is achieved by using expensive light alloys.

Their price is significantly higher than usual. But using heavier baits with them, or those that have increased resistance in the water, is strictly not recommended in order to avoid failure.

Secondly, these are reinforced reels, designed primarily for heavy jigs (up to 50 g) used in the current. Their dimensions are also large - at least 3000, and additional bearings are introduced into the mechanism.

Usually, if the weight of the bait exceeds 50 grams, then it is worth thinking about a multiplier, because inertia-free (meat grinders) with such weights already lose their advantage in casting range and ease of control, and the fragility of their fundamental design begins to affect.

Inertial reels for spinning

The main feature of inertial reels is that the reel rotates after casting even after the bait has reached the desired location and has stopped winding the line. Here you need to stop the reel so that the so-called “beard” does not arise from the excess of the dropped line. This type of reel was previously quite popular before the advent of spinning reels. Nowadays, inertial coils are less common due to their specificity and difficulty in handling.

This type of reel is the most popular due to its more convenient functionality, and also because the models include both lightweight reels and those that can cope with heavy loads and work with thick fishing line. First, the fisherman should fold back the reel bail, hold the line with his finger, which will prevent it from reeling in, swing well and cast, releasing his finger. The line easily comes off the reel in the direction of the flying bait. As soon as the bait reaches the desired place, the line stops unwinding, the line layer lowers, and the angler begins to reel in the line using the handle.

Multiplier reels for spinning rods

Multiplier reels are characterized by greater power than inertial reels and have proven themselves well when fishing with heavy baits. This type of reel is also capable of providing the fisherman with the ability to cast very far. One turn of the handle corresponds to 3.5-6.5 turns of the spool. This tackle will be relevant for experienced spinning players, while beginners are better off taking a spinning reel.

Choosing a spinning reel

When choosing a coil, you should focus on the following parameters:

  • Smoothness
  • Friction clutch
  • Spool
  • Reel handle
  • Gear ratio

Smoothness

The sensitivity of the bait used and the uniformity of the process of winding the line depend on the smoothness of the reel, which is an important factor when fishing. If the fishing line is not reeled in properly, you will get a false sensation of the bait twitching. This will also prevent you from making long casts.

Friction clutch

This part of the spinning reel allows you to fuse the fishing line in the event of a fight with a predator, so that it does not break. With powerful jerks or with a very large predator, it is imperative to give the fish the opportunity to reel in the line. There are two types of clutch: front, when the screw for adjusting the friction stiffness is located on the spool, and rear, when the screw is located on the back of the reel. The front clutch is more sensitive, and it can also operate at a level of rigidity setting at which the mentioned rear clutch will not function, which can result not only in loss of catch, but also of gear.

Spool

The size of the spool depends directly on the individual fishing method and the thickness (diameter) of the fishing line. Indicators are indicated on the reels - 1000, 2000, 3000, etc., which indicate the capacity of the reel. For example, if the number 1000 is indicated, then such a reel is capable of holding 100 m of fishing line with a diameter of 0.1. If the reel says 3000, then it can hold either 100 m of line with a thickness of 0.3, or 200 m with a line diameter of 0.15. In other words, the size of the spool depends on what line you are going to use and what distances you plan to cast the bait.

The bail allows the line to easily come off the spool when casting and blocks it from coming off when closing. It is important that the line immediately falls on the winding roller without getting caught on anything.

Coil gear ratio

This parameter shows how many times the line roller will turn from one revolution of the reel handle. The higher the gear ratio, the faster the reel winds the line, but at the same time its thrust decreases. There are speed and power reels. Power reels are used for catching large fish, and high-speed reels are used for smaller fish.

How to choose a reel for a spinning rod

For rods with a length of 2.7 to 3.5 m, which are mostly used when fishing from the shore and with fairly heavy baits, it is worth selecting a reel by size, in particular focusing on the size of the spool (starting from 2500). For light rods with a maximum length of 2.7 m, it is worth choosing a light reel. In the case of light and ultralight fishing, a thin line is required, which means the spool volume should be in the region of 1500-2000.

Manufacturers of fishing reels

The best manufacturers of spinning reels are the following companies:

  • Daiwa
  • Shimano
  • Ryobi
  • Banax
  • Flagman
  • Balzer
  • Okuma

Reels of these brands are distinguished by high-quality assembly and reliability of parts.

How to choose a spinning reel: summary

And the reel is selected as a complete set for the existing fishing conditions, and first of all, for the weight of the baits that will be used. Of course, it would be completely wrong to buy and install a high-power reel on an ultralight rod, or vice versa. When choosing a spinning reel, you need to take into account a number of characteristics of this device, and immediately pay attention to the size.

There is a certain recommended relationship between the size of the reel and the weight of the baits used. The larger size is suitable for larger bait weights. But the problem is that each company characterizes the size of the coils with its own classification, with Japanese manufacturers indicating the size in thousands - 1500, 2000, 2500... etc., and European manufacturers in tens - 20, 25, 30.... But the dependence is this: the larger the number (the larger the size), the heavier class of rods and baits this reel corresponds to.

These numbers roughly mean the following:
– 750 – 2000 (15-20) – light class, recommended weight of baits up to 14 grams.
- 2000 - 3500 (20-35) - middle class, respectively, the weight of the bait is 15 - 35 g.
— 4000 – 5000 – heavy class.

If you exceed the recommended weight of the lures, then the reel will quickly become loose from excessive loads, or it may fail prematurely. If a sufficiently large and powerful reel is used with small weights, the sensitivity of the entire tackle will be lost, and the spinning rod will simply become “rough.”

Accordingly, the average option “for all cases” can be considered a regular spinning reel with a dimension of 2500 – 3000 (25 – 30). For beginner fishermen, it is recommended to buy a spinning reel with the specified characteristics, for the corresponding rod test (maximum weight of the bait used) - 20 - 30 grams.

It remains to add that inertia-free coils are conventionally divided according to the gear ratio:
- low-speed - 3.5:1 - 4.6:1, they usually have increased power of the mechanism, are suitable for catching large predators, often these are mechanisms of increased power, and their dimensions are larger;
- universal - 4.6:1 - 5.2:1, - the most commonly used reels, suitable for “average” fishing conditions;
- high-speed - 5.2:1 - 6.5:1, - reels for fast retrieving, for example, or for long casts, where a quick reeling of the fishing line is simply necessary at idle distance. As a rule, they have the smallest safety margin.

This is such a long article. I hope that it will help you decide on the choice of reel, or at least understand what they are trying to sell you in the store. I would be grateful for any feedback: comments, retweets and other “classes” are strongly welcomed and encouraged!
