The Old Russian language is the language of the Old Russian people, formed in the Old Russian state (Kievan Rus) mainly on the basis of the dialects of closely related East Slavic tribes. Certain phonetic, grammatical and lexical features bring the Old Russian language closer to the South Slavic and West Slavic languages; all or some. But the Old Russian language was also distinguished by a number of features that were absent in other Slavic languages ​​or that gave different results in them. Polnoglasie - (a lexical-phonetic phenomenon of the modern Russian language: the presence in root morphemes of combinations: oro, olo, barely between consonants, characterizes the phonetic appearance of many modern Russian words).

[h,][zh,] (instead of [w, t,],[zh,d,] - among the southern Slavs and [ts,][d, z] - among the Western Slavs), develops from *tj, *dj ( sv'cha, border) and from *Rt, *qt before front vowels: night, stoves, d'chi (cf.: bake, urine), mochi.

Since the 10th century, the absence of nasal vowels [o], [e]: instead they began to be pronounced [u] and im A, etc. [a]>[,a]: rouka, maso.

The phonetic system of the language of the era of the most ancient monuments was characterized by the following features. The syllable was open, i.e. could not end with a consonant, the sounds in the syllable were distributed according to increasing sonority, in other words, the syllable began with a less sonorous sound and ended with a more sonorous one (dom, slid, praviida). In this regard, until the 12th-13th centuries, when the reduced [ъ] and [ь] fell and new closed syllables appeared, there were no conditions for contrasting consonants in sonority-voice. There were 10 vowel phonemes: front vowels - [i], [e], (b), [e], [b], [a] [leaf, lchyu, (lchiti), lechyu (fly), dnъ, n Amь ] and the back row - [s], [y], [b], [o], [a] [torture, poutati, pta (bird), crowbar, break]. There were 27 consonants. The sound [v] was either labial-dental [v], bilabial [w] (a similar pronunciation is still preserved in the dialects: [lauka], [,deuka], [lou]). The sound [f] was in borrowed words in the bookish and written language of educated people. In the colloquial language, the sound [p] or [x] is pronounced instead in borrowed words: Osip (Josif), Khoma, Khovrony. Hardness-softness pairs formed only the sounds [n]-[n,], [r]-[r,], [l]-[l,], [s]-[s,], [z]-[z ,]. The remaining consonants were either only soft: [j], [h], [ts,], [zh,], [sh,], [sh, t, sh,], [zh, d, zh,] (modern. [`sh,], [`zh,] - let, yeast), or only solid: [g], [k], [x] (gybel, kysel, hytr), [p], [b], [v ], [m], [t], [d]. Before front vowels, hard consonants acquired semi-softness. The consonants [g], [k], [x] before front vowels could only be in borrowed words (geona, cedar, chiton).

The grammatical structure, inflectional in type, inherited many features of the Proto-Slavic and Proto-Indo-European languages.

Nouns differed: by gender: m., Wed., F.; by numbers: unit, dual, when talking about two objects (dva, table, house, dv', l', zhen', legs), plural.

There were 6 cases: I., R., D., V., T., Local (modern prepositional); some nouns also had a vocative form, used in formation (otts - otche, wife - zhen, son - son).

According to the system of case forms, nouns were combined into 6 types of declensions, each of which could include words of different genders. The destruction of this declination system occurred towards the end of the Old Russian period.

Adjectives (qualitative and relative) had a full and short form and were declined in both forms.

The verb had the form of the present (future) tense (I wear, I will say), 4 forms of the past tense: 2 simple ones - aorist (nosikh, skazakh) and imperfect (noshakh, hozhakh), and 2 complex ones - perfect (I am wearing) and plusquaperfect - a long time ago - came (dAхъ wore or am byl wore), each of the forms of the past tense had a special meaning associated with indicating the occurrence of an action in the past, 2 forms of the complex future: the pre-future (I will wear) and the analytical future, which retained much of its character compound verbal predicate [imam (want, start) to wear]. The form ending in -l (like wore) was a past participle and participated in the formation of complex verbal tense forms, as well as the subjunctive mood (byl wore). In addition to the infinitive, the verb had another unchangeable form - supin (or the infinitive of the goal), which was used with verbs of motion ("I'm going to catch fish").

According to the dialectal features within the Old Russian language, the northwestern territories were contrasted with the tsokan (non-distinction between [ts,], and [ch,], [g] plosive formation, the form R.p. singular zh.r. on -b ( in women) and the southern and south-eastern regions with the distinction of [ts,], [h,], [g] fricative and the form R.p. singular zh.r. on -s. There were differences in the vocabulary. However, dialectical features did not destroy the unity of the Old Russian language, as evidenced by the written monuments of the 12-13th centuries, created in different territories of the Old Russian state. Old Russian monuments were written in Cyrillic, Glagolitic texts in the Old Russian language were preserved. The Old Russian language in which these monuments were written was common language of the Old Russian people, which developed in the Kievan state. Business and legal writing was created in the Old Russian language, in complex combination with elements of the Church Slavonic language, the Old Russian language appeared in hagiographic monuments and in chronicles. The formation of a common spoken language of the center of Old Russian also contributed to the strengthening of the unity of the Old Russian language state - Kiev, whose population was made up of people from different dialectical territories. The unified spoken language of Kyiv - Kiev Koine - is characterized by a smoothing of dialectal features and the spread of common phonetic, morphological and lexical features in the speech of its inhabitants.

The strengthening of dialect features and, as a consequence, the weakening of linguistic ties between the territories of distribution of the Old Russian language was associated with the loss of Kiev from the end of the 11th and especially in the 2nd half of the 12th century of its political significance and the strengthening of the role of new centers of public life. Monuments of the 13th century reflect a number of local linguistic phenomena, which indicates the formation of new linguistic communities. For a number of such features, in the 13th century, after the completion of the process of loss of the reduced ones common to the Eastern Slavs, the south and southwest (Kiev, Galicia-Volyn, Turovo-Pinsk lands - the territories of the future Ukrainian and Belarusian languages) were opposed to the north and northeast ( territories of the future Russian language), where, in turn, the Novgorod, Pskov, Smolensk, Rostov-Suzdal dialects began to form, as well as the dialect of the upper and middle reaches of the Oka and between the Oka and Seim rivers. In the 14th century, the territory of the southwest and west of Rus' came under the rule of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and Poland, which further separated them from the northern and northeastern territories, where the Russian state and the language of the Great Russian people took shape. The basis for all Slavic languages ​​would be the Proto-Slavic language, which is very ancient.

Proto-Slavic language

Some scientists consider it a hypothetical language, i.e. presumably former, theoretical - no written monuments of the Proto-Slavic language exist. It was reconstructed based on a comparison of reliably attested Slavic and other Indo-European languages.
A. Schleicher was the first to describe the Proto-Slavic language in 1858 in the article “A Brief Essay on the History of Slavic Languages.” A. Leskin, who studied Proto-Slavic phonetics and morphology, made a great contribution to the study of the Proto-Slavic language.

These linguists made a significant contribution to the reconstruction of the Proto-Slavic language.
Most of the Proto-Slavic vocabulary is original. But long-term proximity to non-Slavic peoples affected the vocabulary of the Proto-Slavic language. Proto-Slavic had borrowings from Iranian, Celtic, Germanic, Turkic, Latin and Greek languages. Most likely, there were borrowings from the Baltic languages, but they are difficult to identify due to the fact that in the case of Slavic and Baltic languages ​​it is often difficult to distinguish borrowed words from native cognates.
Reconstruction of Proto-Slavic vocabulary helps to establish the origins of Slavic languages. Old Slavonic language

It is closest to the hypothetical Proto-Slavic language of all other Slavic languages.
In the IX-XI centuries. The literary language of most Slavic peoples was Old Church Slavonic. The Cyrillic alphabet, developed for the Old Church Slavonic language, later formed the basis of the Russian, Ukrainian, Belarusian, Macedonian, Bulgarian and Serbian alphabets.
Old Church Slavonic was the first Slavic literary language, based on the dialect of the Slavs who lived in the 9th century. in the vicinity of the city of Thessaloniki (now Thessaloniki, the second largest city in Greece). Cyrillic is one of two (along with Glagolitic) ancient alphabets for the Old Church Slavonic language.

Cyrillic-based alphabets are or were the writing system for 108 natural languages, including the following Slavic languages: Belarusian, Bulgarian, Macedonian, Ruthenian, Russian, Serbian, Ukrainian, Montenegrin.
Most of the non-Slavic languages ​​of the peoples of the USSR (of which some had other writing systems on Latin, Arabic or other basis) were translated into Cyrillic in the late 1930s. These are, for example, non-Slavic languages ​​Kazakh, Kyrgyz, Tajik, as well as Mongolian, etc.
The Cyrillic alphabet entirely includes the Greek alphabet (24 letters), but some purely Greek letters (xi, psi, fita, izhitsa) are not in their original place, but are moved to the end. To these were added 19 letters to represent sounds specific to the Slavic language and absent in Greek. Before the reform of Peter I, there were no lowercase letters in the Cyrillic alphabet; all text was written in capital letters.

Glagolitic

Many linguists believe that the Glagolitic alphabet was created before the Cyrillic alphabet, which, in turn, was created on the basis of the Glagolitic alphabet and the Greek alphabet. The oldest surviving Glagolitic inscription with an exact date dates back to 893 (made in the church of the Bulgarian Tsar Simeon in Preslav). The oldest handwritten monuments (including the “Kyiv Leaves” of the 10th century) are written in the Glagolitic alphabet, a more archaic language.
The appearance of the letters of the early Glagolitic alphabet somewhat coincides with the Georgian church alphabet, created before the 9th century, possibly on the basis of the Armenian one. It is known that St. Constantine the Philosopher (Kirill) was familiar with Eastern alphabets (he read Hebrew texts in the original), which is also mentioned in his life. The Glagolic and Cyrillic alphabets in their oldest versions are almost completely identical in composition, differing only in the shape of the letters. When reprinting Glagolitic texts in a typographical manner, Glagolitic letters are usually replaced with Cyrillic (since today few people can read Glagolitic). However, the numerical values ​​of the Glagolitic and Cyrillic letters are not the same: in the Glagolitic alphabet the numerical values ​​of the letters are ordered in accordance with the order of the letters, and in the Cyrillic alphabet they are tied to the numerical values ​​of the corresponding letters of the Greek alphabet.
From the very beginning, Old Church Slavonic was a bookish and literary language and was never used as a means of everyday communication.
By the end of the 10th century. The Old Church Slavonic language underwent changes under the influence of other Slavic languages, and manuscripts written later than this period are considered to have been written in Church Slavonic. We remind you that the Old Church Slavonic language was based on only one of the dialects of the eastern group of the South Slavic branch of the Slavic languages.

Old Russian language

Old Russian language is the language of the Eastern Slavs in the period from the 6th to the 13th-14th centuries, the common ancestor of the Belarusian, Russian and Ukrainian languages. The phrase “Old Russian language” does not refer exclusively to the modern Russian language. This is the self-name of the language of the Eastern Slavs of this period (Russians). The Old Russian language was not unified; it included many different dialects and contributed to the unification of the Eastern Slavs as part of the Old Russian state. There are two dialect zones on the territory of ancient Rus'. This is a northwestern dialect type (Pskov and Novgorod lands, which include the territories of the European north of modern Russia, as well as the territories of northern Belarus). Another dialect type was widespread in the south (future Ukraine), in the center (future central Russia), and in the east (current eastern part of European Russia).
The Old Russian state arose as a result of the unification of a number of East Slavic and Finno-Ugric tribes under the rule of the princes of the Rurik dynasty.

At its peak, the Old Russian state, with its capital in Kiev, occupied the territory from the Taman Peninsula in the south, the Dniester and the headwaters of the Vistula in the west to the headwaters of the Northern Dvina in the north and tributaries of the Volga in the east.
By the middle of the 12th century. a period of feudal fragmentation began, and the Old Russian state actually disintegrated into one and a half dozen separate Russian principalities, ruled by different branches of the Rurik dynasty. Kyiv continued to be formally considered the main table of Rus' until the Mongol invasion (1237-1240), and the Principality of Kiev remained in the collective possession of Russian princes. The Principality of Polotsk was the first to separate from Kyiv (at the beginning of the 11th century). In the second quarter of the 12th century. The Old Russian state completely disintegrated into independent principalities.
The Western Russian written language (“Russki ezik”) was formed and was used in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. There are known texts of this period with Belarusian and Ukrainian features. The Belarusian language is based on the dialects of the Dregovichi, part of the Krivichi, Radimichi and Northerners. After unification with Poland, the use of the Church Slavonic language was partially limited in the lands of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania.
The literary language of the Moscow principality was influenced to a much lesser extent by Polish, in contrast to the Western Russian language, although it was influenced by it in the 16th-17th centuries. some Polish linguistic phenomena were borrowed. But the influence of the Church Slavonic language on the “Great Russian” (“Moscow”) literary language was deeper. Church Slavonic influence affected primarily the vocabulary of the Russian language, as well as syntax, morphology and spelling. But the Russian (Great Russian) language also acquired some new features that were absent in the Church Slavonic, Ukrainian and Belarusian languages.
So, the modern Russian literary language was initially a combination of two old dialect traditions of the Old Russian language: North-West (Novgorod, Pskov) and Center-East (Rostov, Suzdal, Ryazan, a little later Moscow) and was formed during the 17th-19th centuries.

Period of the Russian national language
