The pistons are made of aluminum alloy. Three grooves for piston rings are machined in the upper part of the piston. The two upper piston rings are compression rings, and the lower one is oil scraper.

Compression rings prevent the breakthrough of gases from the cylinder into the crankcase and contribute to the removal of heat from the piston to the cylinder. The oil scraper ring removes excess oil from the cylinder walls as the piston moves.

The characteristic malfunctions of the series engines include:

It is desirable to pour oil into the engine every 10,000 km. In general, the motor has proven itself well, the only negative is the low power.

The 1.6-liter power plant has a number of minor characteristic problems: poor thermostat operation, as a result of which the sensors showed that the engine temperature was falling or, on the contrary, was not rising; crankshaft oil seal, front, leaks oil; idling is characterized by unstable work.

If you do not take into account the above shortcomings, otherwise, the engine is reliable and goes well before a major overhaul.

Of the features of the Zetec series, one can single out the inconvenience when replacing the timing belt. The fact is that the shaft gear is not fixed with a key, but floats relative to the shaft. With a loose fit of the pulley on the shaft, the marks are knocked off and a change in the valve timing is possible. The result of such failures is unstable operation of the motor and the possibility of failure of the valves.

Despite the shortcomings, the model is considered reliable, without any problems. Before overhaul, the engine life is an average of 250,000 km.

Duratorq TDCi powerplants

In our region, diesel units of the family are not particularly popular; they are widely used in Europe. Sales started in 2000, originally intended for Ford Mondeo cars.

The plant recommends pouring new oil after 10,000 km, but it is better to do this earlier, after 6-7 thousand, in order to be safe from trouble. Engine repair is mainly associated with untimely maintenance and low-quality fuel.
