The stone church, topped with a five-domed dome, is designed in the style of the temples of ancient Byzantium and is a bit reminiscent of the St. Sophia Cathedral in Constantinople. The height of the church from the surface of the earth to the foot of the cross on the main dome reaches 42 meters. Black domes have a smooth spherical shape. The central dome, having a much larger size than the others, rises upward and is, as it were, supported from below by four small sub-domes, only half protruding from the building in the form of apses. In ancient Byzantine architecture such domes are called conchs. The drum of each dome is surrounded by an arcade of windows, which was very characteristic of the Byzantine style. On June 11, 1887, the construction site was consecrated. Work began in 1888 with a temporary wooden chapel, where they installed the icon of the Merciful Mother of God (It Is Worthy), brought from Athos by Hieromonk Arseny, a famous preacher and missionary. The icon gave the name to the future church. Funds for the chapel were donated by the patron of the temple under construction, merchant D. Zaikin.

On May 29, 1889, the foundation stone of the Temple was consecrated by Bishop Mitrofan of Ladoga. By that time, the foundation and part of the walls had already been built. Another two years passed before, on October 25, 1898, Bishop Benjamin of Yamburg, together with Archpriest John of Kronstadt (now canonized), in the presence of Pobedonostsev, consecrated the main chapel. On March 28, 1900, Metropolitan Anthony consecrated the right (southern) chapel in the name of Saints Sergius of Radonezh and Theodosius of Chernigov, but only three years later the work of gilding the cross, cladding the staircase with granite, and installing a fence was completed in the church. The year 1871 was difficult and terrible for our city. And not only for him. A terrible pestilence, cholera, swept through the Tambov region, which claimed many thousands of lives. (The city of Borisoglebsk at that time belonged to the Tambov province) On June 8, 1871, the epidemic began in Borisoglebsk. A summer fair has just opened in the city. One of the visiting merchants fell ill and soon died. From that time on, cholera began to spread in the city with incredible speed - up to two hundred people died a day.
From the memoirs of a city resident, teacher Maria Grigorievna Zlatoustovskaya (now deceased): “I remember this terrible time well. There were rows of coffins near the Assumption Church and the New Cathedral. People sometimes died in entire families, and there was no one to bury them. Coffins were brought from the City Council and the police. There were so many victims that after a few days the dead were no longer brought into the churches, but were buried right next to the cemetery.
I remember an incident with one of the priests of the city, Father Sergius Guryev. Father, while admonishing the dying or singing the funeral service for the deceased, was very afraid of becoming infected, and every day, coming home, he cried bitterly, asking God for intercession and mercy. The days were hot, the heat was stifling. The streets of the city were deserted. People sat in their houses with shutters and gates closed. The residents of the city tearfully asked the Lord and His Most Pure Mother, our Intercessor and Intercessor, for mercy and help. The temples of the city were constantly open; prayers were offered here for the health of the living and the repose of the dead.
One of the major merchants of the city, Stefan Timofeevich Ivanov, back in the 60s of the 19th century, ordered for his family an icon of the Mother of God that he especially revered, called “Worthy Is” or “Merciful.” The merchant wanted this icon to be painted on Holy Mount Athos, famous for its ancient and special tradition of icon painting. The stone chapel was built with the care and efforts of the merchant Stefan Ivanov. On November 19, 1873, the solemn consecration of her throne took place in front of a huge crowd of people. The chapel building, relatively small in size, had a majestic and architecturally complete appearance and was quite tall. (It is currently impossible to judge the exact size of the chapel, since the original construction plan burned down in a fire on August 17, 1876. The chapel building was located at the intersection of the current Blanska and Tretyakovskaya streets, partly on the territory of the Boiler-Mechanical Plant). On August 15, 1884, the Borisoglebsk merchant of the second guild, Mikhail Alekseevich Gavrilov, became the headman and trustee of the Chapel Church. In 1886, he asked the Bishop for his blessing to expand and rebuild the church building. Local engineer and technician Leonid Vasilievich Mizerovsky was involved in the work, who became the author of the project for a more extensive wooden extension to the stone building. Completed in accordance with all construction requirements of that time, the project by L.V. Mizerovsky, fit perfectly into the overall architectural ensemble of the church. From a relatively small building, the chapel turned into a fairly large temple, the wooden walls of which on both sides were plastered with a thick layer of felt using alabaster. The building was heated by three stoves and was durable and reliable in all respects. The internal dimensions of the church premises were approximately 26 x 23 meters, the height of the refectory was 5 meters.
In the summer of 1886, under the leadership of engineer Mizerovsky, construction works for the construction of an extension. The construction contract was awarded to Yakov Dmitrievich Shokin.
The temple was built mainly at the expense of the headman and trustee of the chapel, merchant M.A. Gavrilova. The creation of the plan and supervision of the work were carried out by engineer L.V. Mizerovsky free of charge, for the Glory of God.
A special word must be said about Mikhail Alekseevich Gavrilov. Having been a trustee of the Chapel Temple for many years, he annually spent considerable sums of his own money on the maintenance, splendor and beautification of this church. Despite its solidity, the extension to the church that was being built had a temporary status, since at that time on the New Market Square of the city, in the immediate vicinity of the chapel, the construction of the majestic Church of the Presentation of the Lord was underway. On the part of the authorities, the trustee of the Chapel Temple M.A. Gavrilov and engineer L.V. Mizerovsky had to endure many trials. They were accused of carrying out illegal construction and engineering incompetence. Gavrilov and Mizerovsky even had to prove their case in the World Court. The litigation lasted about 4 years, during which construction work was suspended (it must be said that construction by this time was already in the process of completion). But, with the help of God, justice triumphed. The construction was successfully completed and the Chapel Church appeared to the eyes of believers in its new form. The warm, spacious and bright church building welcomed its parishioners.
The spiritual labors and efforts of the headman of the Chapel Church were appreciated. For the expansion of the church building and the acquisition of church utensils for it, merchant M.A. On February 24, 1895, Gavrilov was awarded the highest awarded gold medal on a Stanislav ribbon to be worn around the neck.
The construction of the large Sretensky Church was completed in 1901. On December 12, 1902, its solemn consecration took place. By decision of the diocesan authorities, the locally revered icon of the Mother of God “It Is Worthy” was reverently transferred to this new temple. Talking about the history of the Chapel Church of the Virgin Mary, one cannot fail to mention the clergy of this temple known to us. As mentioned above, until 1884 the chapel was assigned to the Transfiguration Cathedral of the city, whose clergy held services here. Since 1884, when it received the status of a Chapel Church, there has been one priest, one deacon and one psalm-reader on staff. On January 26, 1884, Archpriest Matthew Grigorievich Nikolaevsky, transferred here with the blessing of Bishop Palladius II from the Archangel Church in the village of Chigorak, was appointed rector of the Chapel Church in Borisoglebsk. The novice bowed to the stranger, gave him water to drink from the road, and offered to rest in his cell.

Together with the guest, they began to sing psalms and prayers. However, while singing the words “Most Honest Cherub,” the mysterious guest unexpectedly noticed that in their places this song is sung differently, adding before “Most Honest” the words “It is worthy to eat, as truly you are blessed, the Mother of God, the Ever-Blessed and Most Immaculate, and the Mother of our God " And when the monk began to sing these words, the icon of the Mother of God “Merciful,” which stood in the cell, suddenly shone with a mysterious light, and the novice suddenly felt a special joy and began to sob with tenderness. He asked the guest to write down the wondrous words, and he inscribed them with his finger on a stone slab, which softened under his hand like wax.

After this, the guest, who called himself the humble Gabriel, became invisible, and the icon continued to emit a wonderful light for some time. Shocked, the novice waited for the elder, told him about the mysterious stranger and showed him a stone slab with the words of prayer. The spiritually experienced elder immediately realized that the Archangel Gabriel had come to his cell, sent to earth to announce to Christians a wondrous song in the name of the Mother of God - another in the series of those that people learned from the angels (“Glory to God in the Highest,” “Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord of Hosts”, Trisagion “Holy of God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal, have mercy on us”).

Since then, the angelic song “It is worthy to eat...” has been sung during every Divine Liturgy throughout the world - wherever there is at least one Orthodox throne or at least one Orthodox Christian lives.

According to the iconography, the image of the Mother of God is a half-length image of the Most Pure One; on Her right hand sits the Baby clinging to Her with a scroll in his hand. The celebration of this miraculous work takes place on June 11 according to the Christian calendar - on the very day when the heavenly guest visited the Athonite monks.

The icon of the Mother of God “It is Worthy to Eat” is located on the high place of the altar of the cathedral church of the Kareya monastery on Athos. The time of her appearance is determined in 980, her glorification - in 1864.

One Sunday, an elder who lived not far from Kareya went to the monastery for an all-night vigil. The novice remained in the cell. When night fell, an unknown monk knocked on his door. During the all-night vigil, when it was necessary to sing “Most Honest Cherub...”, both stood before the icon of the Mother of God, called “Merciful,” and the guest noticed that they first sang “It is worthy, as truly, to bless Thee Mother of God, Ever-Blessed and Immaculate and Mother of our God..." While singing this hitherto unheard song, the icon of the Mother of God shone with heavenly light, and the novice cried with emotion. At his request, this wonderful song, for lack of paper, was written down on a stone, which softened like wax under the hand of the wonderful singer. Calling himself Gabriel, the wanderer became invisible. The icon of the Mother of God, in front of which the song “It is worthy to eat” was first sung, was transferred to the cathedral church of the Dormition of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Kareia (the administrative center of Athos). The slab with the song inscribed on it by the Archangel Gabriel was transferred to Constantinople during the patriarchate of St. Nicholas Chrysovergo († 995, commemorated December 16). In the Galernaya harbor of St. Petersburg, in honor of the Mother of Mercy, a five-domed church was erected, in which the gracious “Merciful” icon sent from Athos was placed.

Numerous copies of the “It Is Worthy” (“Merciful”) icon are sacredly revered in Russian churches.


Icon “It is Worthy to Eat” from the Refectory Church of the Trinity-Sergius Lavra

There is such an icon in the Trinity-Sergius Lavra (pictured). The pre-revolutionary copy of the miraculous icon of the Mother of God “It is Worthy”, or “The Merciful”, written on Mount Athos in the Russian Panteleimon Monastery, is located in the Refectory Church in the name of St. Sergius Radonezhsky in the central aisle with right side at the right choir.

Even before the revolution, this icon was brought from Athos by the resident of the Lavra, Fr. Aristoclius. And she immediately began to be revered by believers as miraculous, because people received help before her through their prayers. The Lord kept this shrine during the revolution, during the Civil War and after - during the years of repression it always remained in the monastery. When the godless authorities closed the Lavra, with the blessing of the elders of the Holy Trinity Sergius Lavra, Fr. Aristoclius gave this icon to his spiritual children, nun Euphrosyne (Theological, 1892-1974) and nun Pelageya, who lived in the city of Sergiev Posad, st. Kirova, 47.

All the time before his return to the Lavra, the icon “It is Worthy to Eat” was in this house. And she wasn’t just there, she consoled, healed, admonished, taught. Everyone who prayed in front of this icon during these years felt its grace; it gave everyone their strength. And many came to this house to pray, especially when the liturgy was served in secret. Services began to be held openly in 1946. When the Lavra was opened, the mothers’ house became something like the Lavra’s courtyard. Many priests and seminarians came from Moscow. At that time the academy and seminary were still located in Moscow. Lavra slowly returned to spiritual life. They handed it over to the Church in parts. There was a House of Culture in the Refectory Church; the authorities delayed its return to the monastery for a particularly long time. And when they finally gave it away, it turned out that the building needed serious repairs. It took long years. By that time, neither the nun Euphrosyne nor the nun Pelageya were alive. And the relatives of the nun Euphrosyne, Archpriest. Vladimir and Valentina Nedosekin returned this icon to the Refectory Church, where it remains to this day.
