Unsolved mysteries of the world interesting facts. The most mysterious mysteries of the world that were solved

People have been struggling with the mysteries of the past for centuries, but they still remain unsolved. Mysterious artifacts, mysterious personalities and mysteries of history - as annoying as it is, apparently no one will ever know the explanation for these facts

Nazca geoglyphs

A geoglyph is a giant drawing on the earth's surface. In Nazca, such figures depict either geometric figures, or silhouettes of animals. They seem to have been scratched on rocky soil and from the height of human growth they are just a tangled web of yellow lines. Only when you rise into the air can you see their true outlines. And then what appears before your eyes is either a fifty-meter spider, or a condor with a wingspan of 120 meters, or a lizard with a length of 180 meters.
The age of geoglyphs can only be approximately dated. Archaeological research has shown that they were created in different time. The latest ones date back to the 1st century AD, the oldest - to the 6th century BC.

Mummies from peat bogs

In the peat bogs and bogs of Denmark, Germany, Holland, England and Ireland, people have found well-preserved human mummies. About the first discovery made in Germany, it is said: “In the summer of 1640, in the swamps of Schalholtingen, dead man"Only some of the swamp mummies found are so well preserved that they can be exhibited in museums. All the bodies show signs of violent death: signs of strangulation, broken bones, a cut throat, and sometimes all together. On the body of the so-called "man from Lindow" traces of blows were found, his skull was pierced with an ax. The executioners tied the animal's sinews around the unfortunate neck, after which they cut the throat. Under the long braids of the young "woman from Boathouse" a deeply depressed inverted letter V was found on the back of her head. A teenager of 10-14 years old, who recovered from a swamp near Kayhausen in Lower Saxony, he was tied so expertly that he could not even move.
It is still unclear whether this was an execution or a sacrifice. Why were these people treated so cruelly? Archaeologists believe that the swamps served as a place for ritual actions, because from ancient times they were considered sacred. However, this mystery will apparently remain unsolved.

Easter Island idols

These grandiose stone sculptures, moai, are the mysterious remains of a little-known ancient civilization, differ from those found on other Pacific islands. The inhabitants of Easter themselves have long forgotten about their purpose. They were first seen by the Dutch navigator Jacob Roggeveen, who landed on this island on Easter Day.
In 1955 Thor Heyerdahl managed to raise one of the statues in 12 days with the help of the island residents. Armed with beams, the workers lifted one side of the statue and placed stones underneath. Then they raised the statue a little higher and added stones again. The operation was repeated until the sculpture stood upright. But Heyerdahl was never able to explain how “hats” weighing several tons were put on the statues

Pope Joanna

According to medieval biographers, Pope Joan was born in 882. Feeling thirsty for knowledge, she went to Athens. In those times theological education was inaccessible to women, so she pretended to be a young man and took the name John the Englishman. When Joanna arrived in Rome, she was immediately noticed for her learning, piety, and beauty. After becoming a cardinal, after the death of Pope Leo IV, she was appointed as his successor. From the outside, she seemed absolutely worthy of her rank, but suddenly, during the festive procession of John, she gave birth to a child right on the road and soon died.
A kind of confirmation of this story is the fact that from about 1000. and for almost five centuries the gender of each candidate for the papal throne was verified.
The veracity of the story of the female pope, repeated since the 13th century, was first challenged in the 15th century. Starting from the middle of the 16th century, historians no longer doubted the fictionality of this story. The legend probably arose as a mockery of the pornocracy - the period of female dominance at the papal court, starting from John X to John XII (919-963). Similar phenomenon also noted under Pope Alexander VI Borgia (1492-1503), who appointed his mistress Giulia Farnese to the post of chief treasurer (accountant-auditor) of the Curia, and her younger brother Alessandro Farnese, not having clergy, a little later, in 1493, in at the age of 25, he received the post of cardinal-treasurer of the curia and at the same time bishop of three dioceses; Moreover, it was this cardinal who subsequently occupied (through two popes) the papal throne under the name of Paul III (1534-1549). There is also an interesting fact associated with the military campaign of Alexander VI during civil strife with the Sforza family, when his youngest daughter Lucrezia Borgia was in loco parentis, that is, “in the place of the parent” - she occupied the throne of St. Peter in the absence of her father by his own appointment .

Tomb of Genghis Khan

It is still unknown where Genghis Khan's grave is located. This one, one of greatest secrets no one has been able to unravel human civilization in the last eight hundred years. The burial place attracts not only its historical value, but also the untold riches buried in the ground along with the deceased. According to the most conservative estimates, taking into account historical value, the cost precious stones, gold coins, expensive dishes, skillfully made weapons are estimated at no less than two billion dollars. The jackpot is quite decent and deserves to devote years and even decades to searching for the tomb of Genghis Khan.
After Genghis Khan's death, his body was returned to Mongolia, apparently to his birthplace in the territory of modern Khentii aimag; he was allegedly buried somewhere near the Onon River. According to both Marco Polo and Rashid ad-Din, the funeral escort killed everyone they met along the way. The slaves who performed the burial were put to the sword, and then the soldiers who executed them were killed. The Mausoleum of Genghis Khan in Ejen Khoro is a memorial and is not his burial place. According to one folklore version, a river bed was laid over his grave so that this place could not be found. According to other legends, many horses were driven over his grave and trees were planted there.

Origin of the Basques

The Basques are one of the most amazing mysteries of history: their language has nothing in common with other European languages. Besides, genetic research established the uniqueness of the people we are considering. Basques are people who have the highest proportion of blood in their blood among all Europeans. negative Rh factor(25 percent) and one of the highest proportions of blood classified as type O (55 percent). There is a very sharp genetic difference between representatives of this ethnic group and other peoples, especially in Spain.
Most scientists agree that the Basques are the indigenous inhabitants of Europe, directly descended from the Cro-Magnons, who came to European lands from Africa 35 thousand years ago and remained there. The Cro-Magnons probably did not participate in any subsequent migrations, since archaeologists have not found any evidence to suggest that the population in this area changed throughout time until the arrival of the Romans. This means that all those people who today call themselves Europeans are just children compared to the Basques. Amazing, isn't it?

Time Travelers

Is time travel possible? Science does not give a clear answer. But the world has accumulated a lot of, to put it mildly, strange facts that no one can explain. Here are some of them.

This photo was taken in 1941 at the opening of the South Fork Bridge in British Columbia, Canada. The shot captured a man who clearly stood out from the crowd with his extraordinary appearance. Short haircut, dark glasses, a knitted sweater with a wide neckline over a T-shirt with some kind of symbolism, a massive camera in his hands. Agree, the appearance is quite familiar for our days, but not for the early 40s! And he completely stands out among others. This photo was investigated. We found a participant in these events. But he could not remember this man at all.

Swiss Watches

This item, discovered in a Ming Dynasty tomb, has puzzled researchers. The tomb was opened in 2008 in the Guangxi region (PRC) during filming documentary film. To the surprise of archaeologists and journalists. in the burial there were... Swiss watches!
“When we were removing the soil, a piece of rock suddenly jumped off the surface of the coffin and hit the floor with a metallic sound,” said Jiang Yanyu, a former curator at the Guangxi Museum who participated in the excavation. - We picked up the item. It turned out to be a ring. But, having cleared it of the earth, we were shocked - a miniature dial was discovered on its surface.”

Inside the ring was an engraved inscription “Swiss” (Switzerland). The Ming Dynasty ruled China until 1644. It is out of the question that such a miniature mechanism could have been created in the 17th century. But Chinese experts say the tomb has never been opened in the last 400 years.

An ancient computer?

On the remote Kamchatka peninsula, 200 km from the village of Tigil, strange fossils have been discovered by the University of Archeology of St. Petersburg.
According to archaeologist Yuri Golubev, the discovery surprised scientists by its nature, it can change the course of history. This is not the first time that ancient artifacts have been found in this region. But this find is special. Analysis revealed that the mechanism is made of metal parts that appear to combine to form a mechanism that could be something like a watch or computer. The amazing thing is that all the pieces have been dated back to 400 million years ago

Voynich manuscript

The Voynich Manuscript is a mysterious, undeciphered book written in the 15th century (1404–1438) by an unknown author in an unknown language using an unknown alphabet. The thickness of the book is 5 cm, it contains about 240 pages, measuring 16.2 by 23.5 cm. During its existence, the manuscript was intensively studied by many professional cryptographers, including those recognized throughout the world, and none of them managed to decipher a single word . There is a theory that this book is just a bunch of meaningless random symbols that have no meaning, but there are also those who believe that the manuscript is an encrypted message.

Jack the Ripper

Jack the Ripper is the nickname of an unknown serial killer (or killers) active in the Whitechapel area of London in the second half of 1888. His victims were prostitutes from poor neighborhoods, mostly middle-aged, whose throats were cut by the killer before opening the abdominal cavity. The removal of certain organs from the victims' bodies was explained by the assumption that the killer had some knowledge of anatomy or surgery. However, all the names, the exact number of victims, as well as the identity of Jack the Ripper still remain a mystery.

Crystal Skulls

Experts from various fields of science have long been trying to solve the mystery of fossil crystal skulls (made from rock crystal). Where could they have come from? Who was able to create them? What were they intended for and who did they serve?
A total of 13 crystal skulls are known, and according to some sources, even 21. They are kept in museums and private collections. These are very accurate copies of human skulls and mask portraits made of quartz. They were found in Central America and in Tibet. All these amazing objects were made in ancient times, but the skill of their execution testifies to the highest level of technical knowledge possessed by the ancestors of modern humanity.

Ancient aircraft

The Incas and other peoples of America of the pre-Columbian era left behind a lot of very curious mysterious things. Some of them have been called "ancient planes" - these are small gold figurines that closely resemble modern planes. Initially it was assumed that these were figurines of animals or insects, but later it turned out that they had strange parts that looked more like parts of fighter aircraft: wings, a tail stabilizer and even landing gear. It has been suggested that these models are copies of real aircraft. It is also quite possible that these figurines are just an artistic depiction of bees, flying fish or other earthly creatures with wings.

Phaistos Disc

The mystery of the Phaistos Disc, a round clay tablet found by Italian archaeologist Luigi Pernier in 1908 in the Minoan Palace, also remains unsolved.
The Phaistos disc is made of baked clay and contains mysterious symbols that may represent an unknown language. The language is believed to have been developed sometime in the second millennium BC. Some scholars believe that the hieroglyphs resemble symbols once used in ancient Crete. However, this does not provide the key to deciphering them. Today, the disc remains one of the most famous puzzles in archaeology.

Taman Shud case

"Taman Shud" or "the case of the mystery man of Somerton" is a still unsolved criminal case based on the discovery of the body of an unknown man on December 1, 1948 at 6:30 a.m. on Somerton Beach in Adelaide, Australia.
Despite the fact that the best police officers from all over the world were involved in identifying the person who died from poisoning with barbiturates or sleeping pills, it was not possible to establish who the unknown person was...
In addition, a great resonance was caused by a piece of paper found with the deceased (in a secret trouser pocket), torn from a very rare copy of the book of Omar Khayyam, on which only two words were written - “Taman Shud”.
After persistent searches, the police managed to find one of the copies of the book with Khayyam’s poems and with the last page torn out. On the back of the book, several words were written in pencil that looked like a code.
All numerous attempts to understand the inscriptions were in vain. Thus, the Taman Shud case remains one of the most confusing and mysterious cases still unsolved by the police.

A manuscript written in an unknown language was found by scientists. No one can still decipher and understand the text of the book. Only its name is known - the Voynich manuscript. It was done great amount research and page analysis. Scientists have found that the manuscript was written approximately between one thousand four hundred and four hundred and thirty-eight years. But the language in which the manuscript was written could not be understood. Most likely, this is an artificial language that was invented specifically to encrypt the book. At the same time, language has its own specific structure.

Sculpture of Kryptos

It is located in Langley, Virginia. IN this moment The sculpture adorns the central office of the CIA. Its peculiarity is that no one can decipher the message written on the sculpture itself, and yet twenty years have passed since the sculpture was installed. The world's best specialists, knowledgeable in symbols and hieroglyphs, are working on deciphering it. And in all this time they only deciphered three sections. But in total number there are a hundred of them.

Phaistos disc

It was found by scientists and is somewhat reminiscent of a fascinating story about the adventures of Indiana Jones. The disk was discovered in Phaistos (where its name comes from) in the ruins of a Minoan palace. The disk is believed to depict an unknown form of hieroglyphs dating back to the second millennium BC. The disc is made of baked clay and the symbols are reminiscent of hieroglyphs that were used in ancient Crete.

The riddle of a simple shepherd

In England, in the county of Staffordshire, there is the most common monument to a shepherd dating back to the eighteenth century. But the inscription on it is not so ordinary, but at least, for scientists who cannot decipher it. It looks like this: DOUOSVAVVM. For two hundred and fifty years now, this symbol has been an incomprehensible mystery, as well as its author. Scholars believe the symbol may be a clue to the location of the Holy Grail, and that it was made especially for the Knights Templar. Be that as it may, even Charles Darwin and Charles Dickens could not comprehend the secrets of this symbol.

Mysterious death and the Taman Shud case

This mysterious story took place in Australia, where the body of an unknown person was actually found. It happened in nineteen forty-eight in Adelaide. A key was found in the victim’s pocket, and with it a note with the words “Taman Shud.” As it turned out later, these are the last lines of “Rubaiyat” by Omar Khayyam. Shortly after this, scientists found a copy of his collection, which contained a mysterious code. It is believed that this was someone’s message, but no one was able to decipher it, nor could they unravel the circumstances of the mysterious death.

"Big Ear"

On August 15, 1977, Dr. Jerry Eyman recorded the "WOW" signal. The signal was captured in Ohio by a radio telescope called Big Ear. Jerry worked on a program to search for extraterrestrial civilizations. The interesting thing is that it was not possible to unravel the signal.

What do you know about the Zodiac?

It turns out that this is a serial killer from San Francisco, who was considered one of the most dangerous at that time. His letters were found. There are four of them in total. One of them was deciphered, but the other three do not have a clear decoding, and to this day, scientists are puzzling over this riddle. It is also interesting that Zodiac could not be found, and his identity was not established.

Monument to an unknown author in the USA, Georgia, Elbert city

This is a granite monument with inscriptions on it different languages world, there are only eight of them. On its top there are inscriptions in four ancient languages: Ancient Egyptian, Sanskrit, Akkadian and Greek. There are no encryptions, unknown hieroglyphs or other symbols on it, but the identity of the author who built this monument is still unknown. However, the origin and purpose of the monument also remain a mystery.

Go ahead and search for treasure!

Three encrypted Bale cryptograms are found. It is believed that they contain information about the treasure, or more precisely about its location. One day, a company of gold miners led by Thomas Bale left this cryptogram. The treasure that is hidden must contain gold, silver and various other valuables. The total value of the entire treasure is approximately thirty million dollars. There is an incentive to solve the encrypted code.

Many people like to solve all sorts of riddles. And those that have not yet been solved are especially attractive. Ciphers, riddles and encrypted public messages tease us with their intrigue: why is this message encrypted? what great secrets can it hide?

There are a great many similar mysteries, but we decided - in the spirit of the times - to compile a Top 10 mysteries of the world that have not yet been solved.

In first place, of course, is the Voynich manuscript. Named after the Polish-American antiquarian bookseller Wilfrid M. Voynich, who acquired it in 1912, The Voynich Manuscript is a detailed book, quite thick - 240 pages, written in a completely unknown language.

Still unknown! And there is not even any idea what kind of language this might be. Its pages are also filled with colorful drawings and strange diagrams, images of incredible events, and plants that are unlike any known species, which only adds to the intrigue of a document that is impossible to decipher. The author of the manuscript is unknown, but radiocarbon dating, as well as several examinations, have shown that its pages were made somewhere between 1404 and 1438. The manuscript has been called "The Most Mysterious Manuscript in the World."

In second place is Kryptos, a mysterious sculpture covered in code., created by artist Jim Sanborn, which is located in front of the Central headquarters intelligence agency in Langley, Virginia, USA. It is so mysterious that even the CIA itself could not fully decipher its code.

The sculpture contains four encryptions, and although three of them were deciphered, the code of the fourth has not yet been cracked. In 2006, Sanborn gave a clue that the first encryption contained clues to the fourth, and in 2010 he revealed another: characters 64-69 NYPVTT in the fourth part mean the word "Berlin".

In third place is the Bale cipher. The Bale Cipher is a set of three encryptions that purportedly reveals the location of one of the greatest buried treasures in American history: many thousands of pounds of gold, silver and precious stones. The treasure was originally obtained by a mysterious man named Thomas Jefferson Bale in 1818 during gold mining in Colorado.

Of the three encryptions, only the second was decoded. Interestingly, it seems that the key to the cipher is the American Declaration of Independence - amazing fact, given that Bale's name is the same as the author of the Declaration.

The decrypted text indicated the location of the treasure: Bedford County, Virginia, but its exact location appears to be encrypted in one of the remaining encryptions. Today, treasure hunters carefully scour (often illegally) the hills of Bedford County in search of this untold wealth.

In fourth place is the Phaistos Disc. The mystery of the Phaistos Disc is like an Indiana Jones story. Discovered by the Italian archaeologist Luigi Pernier in 1908 in the ruins of the Minoan palace at Phaistos, the disk remains one of the most famous mysteries in archaeology. It is made of baked clay and contains mysterious symbols that may represent an unknown form of hieroglyphs. It is believed to have been made sometime in the 2nd millennium BC.

Some scholars believe that these hieroglyphs resemble the characters of "Linear A" and "Linear B" writing, in other words, written languages that were once used in ancient Crete.

Then what is the problem? The fact is that “Linear A” cannot be deciphered.

In fifth place is the encryption from Shaboro. This is actually the 18th century Shepherd's Monument in Staffordshire, England. If you look at it from afar, you might mistake it for a sculptural reproduction of Nicolas Poussin's famous painting "The Shepherds of Arcadia". But as soon as you take a closer look, a strange sequence of letters immediately becomes noticeable: DOUOSVAVVM, a code that has not been deciphered for more than two and a half centuries. Although the author of this cipher remains unknown, some believe that this code may be a clue left by the Knights Templar as to the location of the Holy Grail.

Many of our world's greatest minds have tried to decipher this code and failed, including Charles Dickens and Charles Darwin.

In sixth place is the so-called Tamam Shud case. The Tamam Shud case is considered one of Australia's biggest mysteries and revolves around an unidentified man who was found dead in December 1948 on Somerton Beach in the Australian city of Adelaide. Besides the fact that the man was never identified, the matter became even more mysterious when a tiny piece of paper with the words "Tamam Shud" was found in a secret pocket sewn into the man's trousers. This phrase translates as "finished" or "completed" and is used on the last page of Omar Khayyam's collected Rubaiyat poems. To add to this mystery, a copy of the Rubaiyat was soon found, which contained a strange code supposedly left by the dead man himself.

Due to the content of Omar Khayyam's poems, many believe that this message was a posthumous note of some kind, but it still remains unsolved, as does the case itself.

In seventh place is not an object - a signal. One day summer night In 1977, Jerry Eman, a SETI volunteer, became perhaps the first person to receive a message from another planet. Jerry Eman was scanning radio waves from deep space in the hope of accidentally stumbling upon a signal bearing the hallmarks of an intelligent race, when he noticed a jump in his measurements. And I came across it. The signal lasted 72 seconds - the maximum possible measurement duration that Jerry Eman's equipment and scanning range allowed. It was loud and apparently transmitted from a place no human had ever been to: the constellation Sagittarius, from a point near a star called Tau Sagittarius, 120 light-years from Earth.

Jerry Eman wrote the word "Wow!" on the original printout of the signal, which is why it was called the "Wow! signal". All attempts to recapture the signal failed, leading to great debate regarding the nature of its origin and its significance.

In eighth place are the so-called “Letters of the Zodiac”, but this has nothing to do with the signs of the Zodiac. The Zodiac Letters are a series of four encrypted letters believed to have been written by the famous Zodiac, a serial killer who terrorized the people of San Francisco in the latter half of the 1960s and early 1970s. The letters are written with icons, partly resembling letters, partly runes. There is no separation of words from each other.

The letters were likely written as a way to taunt journalists and police, and while one letter (or three fragments of it, to be exact) has been deciphered, the other three remain unsolved. The deciphered message suggests that in three months the Zodiac went from a ready-made Aztec priest to a victim of his own addiction to murder, tearfully begging to help him stop killing people (by putting him, for example, in a gas chamber). Additionally, Starliper's transcript ends with the sentence "My name is Lee Allen." By the way, the identity of the Zodiac himself has also never been established, the killer has not been caught, although the Zodiac murders have not been identified again since the 70s.

In ninth place are Georgia Guidestones. The Georgia Waystones, sometimes called "America's Stonehenge", is a granite monument erected in Elbert County, Georgia in 1979. The stones contain engravings in eight languages - English, Spanish, Swahili, Hindi, Hebrew, Arabic, Chinese and Russian - and each contains ten "new" commandments for the "Age of Reason". They look like four steles, practically connected into a cross with a pillar in the middle and covered on top with a “cap” of a small square slab

Well, what’s mysterious here, most will ask. The monument does not contain any encrypted messages! Yes, it does not. Its purpose and origin remain a mystery. It was erected by a man whose identity has never been precisely established, and who was hiding behind the pseudonym R.C. Christian. Where he got these commandments from is also unknown, for no sources contain anything like this.

Of these ten commandments, the first is perhaps the most controversial: "Keep the human population below 500 million in eternal balance with wildlife." Many believe that this is a calling to reduce the human population to a specified number, and critics of the Guidestones have even demanded their destruction. Some fans conspiracy theories It is even believed that they were created by the "Secret Society of Lucifer", calling for a new world order.

There is a version that these giant “letters” were also installed taking into account some astronomical considerations - hence, in fact, the name: “American Stonehenge”.

In tenth place are the Rongo-rongo boards. These mysterious wooden tablets with the writings of the inhabitants of Easter Island. It is currently not clear whether each character represents separate word or syllable. Today, only about 25 “tablets” have survived in museums around the world. Traditionally, they are numbered with letters of the Latin alphabet, which, however, is not the only way designations of “tables”, among which there is one staff, two inscriptions on the chest decoration of the reimiro, as well as an inscription on the snuff box and on the figure of tangata manu.

The “tablets” were discovered in 1864 by Bishop E. Eyraud, who claimed that these tablets were in almost every aboriginal house, but the islanders were practically unable to read them. Just two years later, almost all the tablets that E. Eyraud saw died: either at his own hands, or during civil strife. It is believed that they were written in the Rapa Nui language. The last person from Rapanu who knew Rongorongo, Vike, died in 1866.

Since then, scientists from all over the world have been trying to decipher rongo-rongo. Significant contributions to the research were made by T. Bartel, Yu. V. Knorozov and N. A. Butinov, I. K. Fedorova, as well as many others. However, there is no consensus even in defining the type of writing, let alone specific readings. The famous theorist of grammatology I. Gelb believed that this was not writing, but only magical drawings, arguing that his signs were so similar to each other, differing only in small details, that an attempt to differentiate them encountered enormous difficulties.

Butinov and Knorozov prove that this is not pictography, but morphemic-syllabic writing. New Zealand researcher S.R. Fisher (in a 1997 monograph) believes that the tablets "mostly reproduce the magical formula of fertilization recorded in the later version of the creation of the world, and are built on the repetition of the producing formula: agent X united with agent Y and gave birth to object(s) Z." According to the ironic characterization of linguists K.I. and I.K. Pozdnyakov, “it turns out to be a leapfrog in which everyone copulates in the most incredible combinations.”

We live in an era when everything that seems strange at first glance can be easily explained. Many diseases have become curable, history in general has already been studied, and technological progress is growing rapidly. But there are still some quirky moments that are still worth thinking about.

But still, there are many secrets and riddles that humans cannot solve. Many books have been written about these phenomena, there are fierce debates between scientists and research, but the truth still lurks somewhere in the shadows. And their explanation can be seriously scary!

In this collection you will learn about the 25 greatest unsolved mysteries, exciting humanity throughout its history.

Wow signal

When Jerry R. Ehman worked on the SETI Project at the Perkins Observatory in Ohio, he did not expect to be able to receive a radio frequency supposedly coming from outer space. He was able to receive a 72-second signal from the constellation Sagittarius, which was not repeated. To this day, no one is sure of the origin of the signal. The signal got its name "Wow" because that's what Jerry wrote on the edge of the printout.

D.B. Cooper

When the criminal, who called himself D.B. Cooper, who stole a Boeing 727 along with $200,000, jumped out of the plane with a parachute. It was never found and remains the only unsolved case in American aviation history.

Lal Bahadur Shastri

He died an unexplained death, while being absolutely healthy. Many claimed that he died from heart attack, but doctors and other specialists who tested him, including his wife, confirmed that he was fine. His wife also made the claim that he was poisoned while signing the Tashkent Treaty. This was never proven as there was no post-mortem diagnosis.

Nazca geoglyphs

The Nazca civilization created some of the most spectacular geoglyphs on the face of the Earth. They include everything from spiders, monkeys, sharks, killer whales and flowers, the accuracy of which is incredible considering Nazca had no way of examining their work from above. The Nazca geoglyphs are still one of the most mysterious places on Earth, Lifeglobe reports.

Orang Medan

What happened to the cargo ship Orang Medan, or “Man of Medan,” in Malaysia is perhaps one of the most fascinating and mind-boggling mysteries to ever exist in maritime history. It all started with an SOS message in 1947, which reported that the captain, along with the rest of the crew, was dead. To make matters worse, even the telegraph operator died while transmitting the message. When Silver Star was able to receive the distress call and went to inspect the ship, they confirmed the deaths of everyone on board. The possibilities of ghosts, dangerous chemicals, and even aliens have arisen, but there is still no conclusion as to what actually happened to the ghost ship.

Ayuda aluminum wedge

In 1974, a group of workers in Romania discovered three different objects in a trench of sand 10 meters deep. Two of them were prehistoric elephant bones that were dated to 2.5 million years ago. The third object, however, was an aluminum wedge that was found along with ancient bones. This discovery stunned most researchers, since aluminum was difficult to create even by 19th century standards. While some consider this evidence of the existence of aliens, others call the aluminum wedge a hoax. Regardless of what it is, there is no definite confirmation yet.

Poltergeist Mackenzie

No. 10. Rongo-rongo

Rongo-rongo is a system of mysterious records that were discovered on Easter Island in the 19th century. Rongorongo is believed to represent a lost writing system or proto-writing.

The first mention of Rongorongo was found in a letter from monk Eugene Eyraud, who arrived on Easter Island on January 2, 1864. Numerous attempts to decipher Rongorongo have been unsuccessful. Perhaps deciphering them would provide an answer to the main mystery of the island - the purpose of the giant statues of Easter Island.

Several dozen wooden objects with Rongo-rongo inscriptions were found on Easter Island. Now they are exhibited in museums around the world, some of them are in private collections.

No. 9. Georgia Tablets

The Georgia Tablets are a granite monument that is sometimes called the “American Stonehenge” (which leads to confusion with the Indian construction of the same name).
The height of the monument is more than 6 meters, it consists of six granite slabs with a total weight of about 100 tons. One slab is located in the center, four around it. The final slab sits on top of these five slabs, aligned according to astronomical events.
Erected in Elbert County, Georgia in 1979. The stones are engraved with inscriptions in 8 languages: English, Spanish, Swahili, Hindi, Hebrew, Arabic, Chinese and Russian. Each inscription contains one of the 10 "new" commandments of the "Age of Reason".

1. Let the earth's population never exceed 500 million, being in constant balance with nature.
2. Regulate fertility wisely, enhancing the value of life preparation and the diversity of humanity.
3. Find a new living language that can unite humanity.
4. Show tolerance in matters of feelings, faith, traditions and the like.
5. Let fair laws and an impartial court stand up for the protection of peoples and nations.
6. Let each nation decide its own internal affairs, bringing only national problems to the world court.
7. Avoid petty litigation and useless officials.
8. Maintain a balance between personal rights and public duties.
9. Above all, value truth, beauty, love, striving for harmony with infinity.
10. Don’t be a cancer for the earth, leave room for nature too!

Although the monument itself does not contain encrypted messages, its purpose and origin are shrouded in mystery. The monument was erected by a man who is known only under the pseudonym “R.K. Christian.”
Among the 10 commandments there are some very controversial ones. For example: “Maintain a human population of 500,000,000 in constant balance with nature.” Some conspiracy theorists even believe that the commandments were developed by a secret society to create a new world order.

No. 8. Letters of the Zodiac

Zodiac is a serial killer active in Northern California and San Francisco (USA) in the late 1960s. The identity of the perpetrator has not yet been established.
Zodiac was the alias the killer used. He sent sarcastic and impudent letters to the editors of local newspapers. In letters, he sent cryptograms in which he allegedly encrypted information about himself. Three of the four cryptograms still remain undeciphered.

Zodiac committed the murders between December 1968 and October 1969. According to Zodiac's own statements, the number of his victims reaches 37, but investigators are only sure of seven cases.
During the investigation, many suspects were named, but no convincing evidence was provided to link any of them to the murders. The California Department of Justice has kept the Zodiac case open since 1969 to this day.

No. 7. Signal "Wow!"

Signal "Wow!" ("Whoa!" signal) was recorded by Dr. Jerry Eyman on August 15, 1977. At the time, the doctor was working on the Big Ear radio telescope at Ohio State University. When Eyman heard the signal, he was so amazed that he wrote “Wow!” on the side of the fixed symbols. (“Wow!”). This signature gave the signal its name. All characteristics of the received signal corresponded to the parameters of extraterrestrial signals. The radio signal observation time was 72 seconds.

Astronomers from the United States suggest that a possible source of the signal could be hydrogen around the nuclei of comets discovered after 2005 and not taken into account as possible sources of the signal in earlier works.

No. 6. Taman Shud case

The Taman Shud case is a criminal case initiated following the discovery of the body of an unknown man on December 1, 1948 on Somerton Beach in the Australian city of Adelaide. The incident also became known as the Somerton Mystery Man Case.
The case is considered one of the most mysterious mysteries in Australian history. There are many versions about the identity of the deceased and the causes of his death.
Public interest in this incident remains very significant for a number of reasons: for example, during the investigation, some facts emerged indicating the possible involvement of special services in the incident. In addition, for more than half a century, the investigation was unable to either establish the identity of the deceased or accurately determine the method of his death. The biggest resonance was caused by a piece of paper discovered with the deceased, torn from a copy of a very rare edition of Omar Khayyam, on which only two words were written - Tamam Shud (“Tamam Shud”).

After a thorough search, the police managed to find one of the copies of the book with Khayyam’s poems and with the last page torn out. On the back of the book, several words were written in pencil that looked like a code.

No. 5. Monument in Shugborough

At Shugborough in Staffordshire, on the grounds of an old manor house that once belonged to the Earl of Lichfield, there is a memorial monument from the mid-18th century. The bas-relief depicts a copy of the 2nd version of Poussin’s painting “The Arcadian Shepherds” in mirror reflection and with the classic inscription “ET IN ARCADIA EGO” in the correct reflection. Below the bas-relief are carved the letters O U O S V A V V - framed by two more letters D and M. DM may mean Diis Manibus, but the central abbreviation remains unclear. The set of letters is a kind of code, the deciphering of which has been going on for more than 250 years.

Some enthusiasts, including some of the world's greatest minds (Charles Dickens and Charles Darwin), suggested that the code could be the key to the information left by the Templars about the location of the Holy Grail.

No. 4. Phaistos Disc

The Phaistos Disc is a unique monument of writing, presumably of the Minoan culture of the Middle or Late Bronze Age, found in the city of Phaistos on the island of Crete. Its exact purpose, as well as the place and time of manufacture are not known with certainty.
Many works have been devoted to the study of the Phaistos Disc, and the latter have repeatedly made statements about the decipherment of the inscription on its surface. However, none of the proposed readings has become generally accepted in the scientific community.

Work on the study of the Phaistos Disc is progressing slowly, which is primarily due to the brevity of the message and the isolation of the writing system used in it. According to most experts, to successfully decipher the Phaistos Disc it is necessary to find other monuments of the same writing. There are a number of hypotheses about the non-linguistic nature of the images of the Phaistos Disc.
Currently, the Phaistos Disc is on display in the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion (Crete, Greece). Today, the disc remains one of the most famous puzzles in archaeology.

No. 3. Bale cryptograms

Bale's cryptograms are three encrypted texts that supposedly contain information about the location of the treasure: thousands of pounds of gold, silver and precious stones. The treasure was allegedly buried in Virginia near Lynchburg by a party of gold prospectors led by Thomas Jefferson Bale in 1818.
It is known that the first information about the “Bale Treasure” appeared in 1865 along with the publication of a pamphlet by an unknown author, the full title of which read as follows: “The Bale Papers or Book Containing the True Facts Concerning the Treasure Buried in the Years 1819 and 1821 near Bufords, Bedford County, Virginia, and has not been found to date." The publisher was James Beverly Ward, who provided the manuscript to the Library of Congress, where it remains to this day.

The author chose to remain anonymous, explaining this with a desire to protect himself from the persistent attention of the press and potential treasure hunters. The brochure was published by Virginian Book in Lynchburg, Virginia, and was priced at 50 cents.
The author of the brochure managed to decipher cryptograms 1 and 2. Cryptogram No. 1 described the exact location of the cache, and cryptogram No. 2 was a listing of its contents.

The third cryptogram, which supposedly contained the addresses and names of potential heirs, has still not been read. The mystery of the cryptograms has not yet been solved; in particular, the question of the real existence of the treasure remains controversial.

No. 2. Kryptos

Kryptos is a sculpture with encrypted inscriptions created by artist Jim Sanborn. The sculpture is installed in front of the CIA headquarters in Langley, Virginia.

November 3, 1990 is the date of installation of the sculpture. From this moment on, attempts to decipher the mysterious message have not stopped. The contents of three of the four tables have already been revealed, but the remaining last table, containing 96 characters, remains an unsolved world mystery...

No. 1. Voynich book

The Voynich Manuscript, or Voynich Manuscript, is an illustrated codex written in the 15th century by an unknown author in an unknown language using an unknown alphabet. The pages of the manuscript contain many colorful drawings of strange diagrams, descriptions of events, drawings of plants that do not correspond to any known species.
Based on the results of radiocarbon dating of four fragments of the manuscript, University of Arizona chemist and archaeometrist Greg Hodgins determined that the parchment for the manuscript was made between 1404 and 1438 during the early Renaissance.
The manuscript was intensively studied by cryptography enthusiasts and cryptanalysis professionals. Neither the entire manuscript nor even part of it could be deciphered. A series of failures turned the manuscript into a famous piece of cryptology.

In the world today there are many theories about the nature of the origin of the manuscript. Some believe that this is a pharmacology textbook. Other researchers believe that the plant drawings indicate an alchemy textbook. The fact that many of the diagrams have astronomical content, combined with unidentifiable drawings of biological life forms, prompts speculation about the alien origin of the unusual manuscript. None of the assumptions has received unambiguous confirmation or recognition in the scientific community.
The book bears the name of the antiquarian Wilfried Voynich, who acquired it in 1912. In 1959, second-hand bookseller Hans Kraus bought the manuscript from heiress Ethel Voynich for $24,500 and donated it to the Beinecke Rare Book Library at Yale University in 1969.
P.S. One of the most famous mysterious incidents that happened on Russian territory is the mystery of the fall Tunguska meteorite in 1908. Several Italian scientists have hypothesized that the crater of the Tunguska meteorite may be Lake Cheko on the Kimchu River, which is located 8 km northwest of the epicenter of the explosion.
