Near Alexandria, on papyrus No. 470 from the library of J. Rylands, the earliest known text of a prayer to the Virgin Mary was discovered today. The papyrus dates back to the year 250 and contains a prayer in Greek, which is still used during Orthodox worship: “Under Your mercy we take refuge, O Virgin Mother of God, do not despise our prayers in sorrows, but deliver us from troubles, O O pure and blessed One.” This find is interesting because, firstly, it confirms the veneration and prayers of the Mother of God among early Christians, and secondly, it confirms the ancient use of the term Θεοτόκος (Mother of God).

Theotokos rule

The Theotokos Rule is written for Orthodox Christians and marks fifteen major milestones in the earthly life of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Therefore the rule is divided into fifteen parts. Venerable Seraphim Sarovsky blessed his spiritual children to read the rule 150 times a day in the Diveyevo Monastery. It is believed that in the cell of Seraphim of Sarov there was an old book with descriptions of miracles performed through the prayers of the Mother of God, Hail the Virgin Mary, the Rule of the Theotokos and other prayers. Reading the rule is an important part of spiritual life; this prayer helps to remember what a difficult spiritual path the Mother of God went through when she gave birth to our Savior Jesus Christ.

"Rejoice to the Virgin Mary..." is read 150 times daily:
Rejoice to the Virgin Mary, Blessed Mary, the Lord is with You; Blessed are You among women and blessed is the fruit of Your womb, for You have given birth to the Savior of our souls.

If, out of habit, it will be difficult to complete 150 times daily, you should read 50 times at first. After every ten, you need to read “Our Father” and “Doors of Mercy” once:

Fifth decade. We remember the Nativity of Christ, we pray for the rebirth of souls, for new life in Christ.

We remember the Presentation of the Lord, and the word prophesied by Saint Simeon: “And a weapon will pierce your very soul.” We pray that the Mother of God would meet the soul at the hour of death and would grant her, with her last breath, to partake of the Holy Mysteries and lead the soul through terrible ordeals.

What should I pray to You for, what should I ask of You? You see everything, you know it Yourself: look into my soul and give it what it needs. You, who have endured everything, overcome everything, will understand everything. You, who entwined the Baby in a manger and took Him with Your hands from the Cross, You alone know all the heights of joy, all the oppression of grief. You, who have received the entire human race as adoption, look at me with maternal care. From the snares of sin, lead me to Your Son. I see a tear watering Your face.
