April 18 - Day of Military Glory of Russia - Battle of the Ice (1242).

On April 18, Russia celebrates the Day of Military Glory - the victory of Prince Alexander Nevsky over the German knights on Lake Peipsi. Given historical event also commonly called Battle on the ice. The holiday was officially established in March 1995.

It all started back in 1240. Then the young and energetic Russian prince Alexander attacked the Swedish camp near the Neva and won. For his brilliant offensive, people called him Nevsky.

In 1242, after the capture of Pskov by the German knights, Alexander went on the offensive. The brave prince gathered military forces. In April of this year, a decisive battle was to take place on Lake Peipsi. Alexander successfully built his army and at the first attack of the knights he surrounded the enemies. Most of the frightened German knights surrendered. Those who tried to escape from the prince in panic fell under the thin spring ice directly into the cold water of the lake.

So the Russian army, led by Prince Alexander Nevsky, won a brilliant victory over their enemies. The chronicles of that time describe the proud entry of the victorious prince into Pskov. Dozens of captured knights became a beautiful proof of his power and at the same time a trophy for him. After the liberation of the cities, the people fell in love with their prince even more. And the Russian Orthodox Church even ranked Alexander among the saints. So April 18 became the Day of Military Glory.

The Battle of the Ice is a bright page in the history of Russia. April 18, as the Day of Military Glory, is intended to strengthen Russian patriotism and pride in the history of its people.

The International Association of Book Publishers initiated the creation of the World Book and Copyright Day holiday. The holiday was established within the framework of the UNESCO General Conference in Paris in 1995 and approved by a UN resolution. At the same time, the UNESCO Prize was established, which is awarded for active contribution to the promotion of the ideals of tolerance in literature for children and youth. The holiday began to be celebrated in 1996. A similar holiday has already existed since 1930 in Catalonia, one of the provinces of Spain. On April 23, Saint George's Day, the patron saint of Catalonia, is celebrated there. The Book Festival is part of this day. Buyers in bookstores are given a rose for every book they buy. On this day you can receive a rose as a gift in Moscow. This tradition was introduced in the library of the Cervantes Institute.

The choice fell on April 23 also because on this day William Shakespeare and Miguel Cervantes died in 1616, and Maurice Druon was born in 1918. An important aspect of this holiday is the problem of copyright, which represents the moral and property protection of works of intellectual work. The Universal Copyright Convention was adopted in 1952 at a UNESCO conference in Geneva.

In Moscow, World Book and Copyright Day is traditionally celebrated on Arbat. In a number of countries, it is customary to organize book fairs and exhibitions and give books to each other. Numerous meetings with writers are held in stores and libraries.

April 23 is considered a holiday not only by writers, but also by librarians, publishers, editors, teachers - everyone whose profession and life is connected with books.

In the world, including in a number of Russian cities, there are 95 monuments to books.
