Celandine is a weed and a useful plant. Application and preparation of celandine decoction

The healing properties of Celandine have been known since ancient times. This unique plant was widely used by Eastern and European healers back in antiquity. Currently, even staunch supporters official medicine recognize the undoubted effectiveness of treating a number of diseases with herbal remedies based on Celandine.

Latin name species – Chelidonium (“swallow”), since in ancient times there was an opinion that birds used the juice of the grass to treat the eyes of their chicks. The ancient Greek healer Thiophos called it “herb for a hundred ailments”; this student of Aristotle left behind the first detailed description Celandine and instructions for its use.

In Rus', the plant has been used for many centuries to treat difficult-to-heal and festering wounds, as well as to reduce warts; it was called gladishnik, chistukha, chistoplot, warthog and dog soap. The nickname “swallow grass” has also stuck with us.

According to botanical classification, it is a perennial herbaceous plant belongs to the Poppy family of the Dicotyledonous genus. It has lyre-shaped leaves and bright yellow flowers. The height of the Asian Celandine bush is 30-50 cm, and the Great Celandine bush is up to 1 meter or more. The herbaceous shrub bears fruit up to three times during the summer season; In place of the flowers, small pods with seeds ripen. Its habitat is very wide; The plant is found almost everywhere in our country.

Note:This plant is poisonous, so great care must be taken when collecting raw materials. When using ready-made preparations of Celandine, you must strictly adhere to the recommended dosages in order to avoid undesirable consequences.

As a rule, the above-ground part of the bush is used as a medicinal raw material, but there are folk recipes that also involve the use of roots. Collection and harvesting is carried out during the flowering period. It is recommended to dry the collected herbs in protected from the sun and well-ventilated areas. The dried substrate for the preparation of medicines can be stored for 3 years.

Biologically active components of Celandine

The aerial parts (grass), as well as rhizomes and fruits contain the following compounds:

  • essential oils;
  • phytoncides (natural antibacterial compounds);
  • organic acids;
  • bitterness,
  • vitamins (mainly A and C);
  • saponins;
  • alkaloids (alocryptopine, sanguinarine, protopine, chelidonine and coptisine).

Note:The alkaloid chelidonine is a “relative” of morphine. In small concentrations it helps relieve pain, but an overdose can cause seizures and even paralysis of the nervous system.

Healing properties of Celandine

The medicinal plant is characterized exclusively wide range healing properties. It is used to accelerate the healing of soft tissue in wounds and to improve the flow of bile, as well as as an anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and analgesic agent. Biologically active components have anticonvulsant and diuretic (diuretic) effects. The use of products based on the herb Celandine in small doses helps fight hypertension and tachycardia. The drugs also have a mild sedative (calming), antispasmodic and expectorant effect. Biologically active components help improve intestinal function, allowing you to fight atony.

During breastfeeding, Celandine is used when a woman has insufficient milk supply. Herbal preparations are used to treat many skin diseases (acne, warts).

Important: Recently in scientific circles there has been a lot of talk about the benefits of celandine in the treatment of cancer problems. Unfortunately, to unanimous opinion medical luminaries have not yet arrived, but the antitumor effect of chelidonine - one of the alkaloids of Celandine - has been recorded in a number of scientific experiments. Under the influence of active components (alkaloids), the growth of tumors and the development of secondary foci (metastases) slow down. A number of cancer patients even experience remission. In this regard, oncologists pin high hopes on drugs based on Celandine extracts.

Various products based on Celandine can be indicated for oral administration or for external local treatment of wounds and problem areas of the skin.

note: If the treatment of a particular disease involves taking Celandine preparations orally, then it is recommended to start with weak concentrations so that the body gradually adapts to components with toxic properties. To reduce the toxic effects, it is recommended to drink milk and consume fermented milk products at the same time.

In what other situations can it help and how safe is it to use?

What is celandine

Low bushes with a straight, rounded stem (it releases milky juice at the break), ovoid leaves located at the root zone and above, and yellow four-petaled flowers connected into umbrella inflorescences - this is what this plant looks like. Belongs to the Poppy family, part of the genus of dicotyledons. After flowering ends, seed boxes appear on the bushes: this happens up to 3 times during the summer season, so self-seeding is active. Mostly on the territory of Russia the following are observed:

  • great celandine (tall bushes - can reach 1.2 m);
  • Asian celandine (low bushes no higher than 50 cm).

Official name of this plant in Latin - Chelidonium, which translates as "swallow" and refers to its use as medicine for eye diseases. It has received several names among the people: warthog (due to its ability to treat warts and papillomas), podtynnik (due to its location next to fences), yellow milkweed (due to the color of its milky juice).

Compound

Any instruction - for a finished drug from a pharmacy or raw materials for home preparation of a medicine - reminds the consumer of the danger hidden in the plant. Celandine juice contains several toxic components - these are benzophenanthridine derivatives, among which the most notable are:

  • homochelidonin - is a local anesthetic with a toxic nature, causes convulsions;
  • chelerythrine – has a local irritating effect and can cause skin burns;
  • sanguinarine - also has the ability to cause convulsions similar to those provoked by strychnine;
  • protopin - affects vegetation and uterine tone.

In addition to isoquinoline alkaloids, which are not eliminated even after drying the roots/leaves, the chemical composition of all parts includes essential oils, flavonoids, vitamin C large quantities, saponins, resins, organic acids, carotene, phytoncides. The degree of toxicity in the roots is higher than in other parts of the plant, so their use should be as careful as possible, strictly according to the instructions.

What is celandine, the beneficial properties and contraindications of celandine, what are they? medicinal properties this plant, all this is of great interest to those who lead healthy image life, monitors her health, and is interested in traditional methods of treatment, including the use of medicinal herbs. So we will try to answer these questions in the following article.

Celandine, or warthog, is a monotypic genus of perennial herbaceous plants of the Poppy family. According to modern ideas, the only species of the genus is Greater Celandine (Chelidonium majus). The Latin name of the genus - Chelidonium - goes back to the Greek. “swallow”: the ancient Greeks noticed that the plant blooms with the arrival of swallows and withers with their departure, they called it Chelidonlutn - swallow grass.

This is a perennial herbaceous plant with a multi-headed short rhizome and a tap root, red-brown on the outside and yellow on the inside.

Greater celandine plants have a straight, branched stem 50-100 cm high, at the break releasing drops of thick milky sap, which immediately turns orange-red in air. If, when picking this plant, its juice gets on your hands, it stains them yellow, and after a while the stain turns brown and resembles the trace left by iodine. This juice is bitter, burning, with an unpleasant, although faint, odor. On the skin it causes a burning sensation and even blisters. The entire plant is poisonous and is not eaten by livestock.

The leaves of the plant are basal and lower stem with a petiole, the upper ones are sessile, alternate. The leaves are deeply pinnately divided, have 3–5 pairs of round or ovate lobes. Upper lobe leaves are larger, usually three-lobed; leaves are green above, bluish below.

The flowers are regular, golden yellow, not large. Flowers on long stalks are collected in small simple umbrellas. Each flower consists of four petals about 1 cm long. Celandine does not have nectaries, but attracts insects with an abundance of pollen. By eating it, insects fly from flower to flower and promote cross-pollination.

The flower protects its pollen reserves from bad weather, and when the sky begins to frown, foreshadowing rain, the petals move closer and cover the stamens. In the sun, the flower opens again, hospitably inviting insects.

Blooms from May to August.

The fruit is a multi-seeded pod-like capsule. The seeds are small, black, shiny with a white comb-like appendage, which ants love to feast on, thereby promoting the wide distribution of seeds. They not only eat their fleshy combs on the spot, but carry the seeds as a reserve into their anthills, losing some of them along the way. And along the path of the ants next year new plants grow. Sometimes celandine appears in the cracks of old stone walls, in which ants nest, dragging seeds there.

In Russian it is called “celandine”, “milk-yellow”, “warthog”. Celandine acquired, along with its main name, several more minor ones. The infusion of the herb is sprayed on cultivated plants to protect them from aphids, thrips, scale insects and other evil spirits that claim to be grown on the treasured six hundred square meters.

IN old times The juice of the plant was used for etching and blackening of metals. Using dried or fresh celandine you can get a good dye for wool. It is painted in a wide variety of colors - from red to yellow, depending on the thickness of the solution. If desired, fatty oil is obtained from the seeds (the seeds are small).
