Rottweiler in the world. Origin of the Rottweiler

    Katerina

I love Rottweilers! I was still very little when I “met” such a friend; they lived on the floor below. Gorgeous dog! Now we have a small one child and husband still plans to buy a puppy by summer. Let them grow up together:) Rottweilers are very smart. I read somewhere that they even have the intelligence of a 5-year-old child - they understand everything! Now I’ve read about the dimensions, but it doesn’t scare me at all! This breed is very wonderful, both a friend and an assistant and a security guard while my husband is at work!

    • Galina

A ROTTWEILER is not a dog, it is most likely a big-hearted human being. Yes, this is, first of all, INTELLIGENCE, DEVOTION, CHARM, a little cunning and bitchiness like all ladies (I haven’t kept male dogs, I can’t speak for them). For me, my “girls” were children and friends and sisters. They literally understood at a glance, at a glance and simply read my THOUGHTS and COMMANDS without words. They were wonderful companions in any games, such as school, store, post office, hide and seek, tag, repeaters, porters, horses, etc. and guards for my children. Namely, for me they were ready to do ANYTHING, just “tell me MOM”, if necessary, then into the pool with your head, that is, to death. Their devotion was so boundless that if I had to give them to someone else even as adults, I am sure that they would have died of boredom, or simply become embittered. Because without the permission of “MOM” (there were several sad and sudden cases of me being absent from home for up to two or three days or simply going to work for the day), we do not want to eat, play, or even go out when necessary, “we will endure and wait only mom,” with no one else, without my verbal permission, they will never leave the protected object. What an object, if suddenly (at a call) you had to move away from the Rottweiler with a toy in its mouth, then this toy became absolutely unnecessary and involuntarily fell to the floor. I had 4 Rottweilers, and each with its own character, disposition and you can hardly call them clumsy, but if necessary, they, like cats, can be silent and dexterous. In general, I can talk about them and their merits endlessly. And their main drawback, which I can’t forgive them, is that they don’t live long.
Well, I wish all future owners of this breed, first of all, honesty towards their pets and IN GENERAL, then patience and effort in their first year of life. And think about whether you can finish what you started, and whether you can endure the inevitable loss of your family member...

      • Dina

Galina, hello, I’ve been wanting to buy a Rottweiler for a long time, and after your description of their merits, I’m almost ready, but I have absolutely no experience in training and they always write that this breed is not for beginners, we have a private house and there have always been dogs and cats that were not purebred, like how do Rottweilers get along with cats? And at what age should you buy a puppy, at what age should you start training with a professional and how long will it last? Answer, if it’s not difficult, thank you.

        Sveta

I believe that Rottweilers do best in a private home. My brother had a Rottweiler 10 years ago, and he built him a wagon, because... upon the arrival of strangers, Max behaved belligerently and aggressively. But he loved his family very much, because... They adopted him as a puppy. He was huge, he would put his paws on your shoulders and lick you, such a cutie! But it’s a pity that Rottweilers really don’t have a long lifespan, our Max got sick and died... Oh, how they lost a family member((

        Oleg

The dog is serious, in the sense that it is quite large and has powerful jaws, so its training must be taken seriously. And the situation in the family should be normal, without distortions, like those of my friends, where the Rottweiler, due to the inclinations of both the owner and the son, had distortions in the psyche and bit everyone.

        Igor

I had a ROTTIE. Brilliant creature! I found no worse - a Cane Corso. My wife said that we need to change the breed because... The first dog is the best! In general, Molossians are for those “who understand a lot about it”

        Rita

My Froska lived for 15.5 years. I ate buckwheat with meat as a base + everything in a row. At home she was like a cat - a person of the most tender soul. She got along with the cat and took care of the children. She was generally friendly towards people and calm on the street. But there were problems on the street because she hated everyone large dogs white color - she simply went out into the street as a hunt to look for large white dogs there because she was abused by a South Russian Shepherd dog as a puppy. So I always walked with her on guard, trying to look out for all these dogs ahead of her and take preventive measures))). She got along well with other dogs - both big and small. I was hilariously playing with my neighbor's tiny Japanese Chin. It must be admitted that the companies are exceptionally smart and devilishly stubborn. It is better for weak-willed people not to mess with them. I can’t say anything about laziness - mine was very active, I jumped all the time like a boxer on a shuttle, I carried everything with my butt))), played, fussed and rushed around... 56 kg. I didn’t drive to ZKU, only to general course obedience.

        Anatoly

The best way, but if you don’t put the chain of command, you may regret it. This is a very strong and strict dog. Until my death, mine did not allow familiarity (like hugging the neck), but I didn’t bother. Otherwise, she obeyed flawlessly; laziness had to be circumvented with cunning. My Dusya lived for almost 13 years, although in childhood she suffered terribly from interitis, and at the age of three she had purulent inflammation uterus, abdominal surgery Well, infertility after removal. I managed to give birth once from my own Doberman. Like a mother - not very much, too clumsy, but what does that cub need? Khan came once.
She loved our cats wildly, if she catches them, she will lie there until the cat looks like it came out of a washing machine with a bad spin. But they didn’t particularly object. The only problem with the cats was that Dusya suffered from unfulfilled motherhood and began to steal kittens, and then lick them to death. I almost paid for this with my eye: the mother came straight to the booth to arrange a showdown, but after that the cat disappeared forever, and Dusya’s eye was turned in the other direction, but then it was pulled back into place by a muscle.
She died seriously, with a stroke and paralysis of the back. It was cold, they brought her into the house, and she, the fool, out of delicacy, did not go to the toilet for three days! I endured it. The veterinarian gave me three days to make a decision regarding the injections, but I waited for more than a week, still hoping for a miracle. When I realized that the dog had become a burden to itself, I took it away and put it to sleep. The only thing I could do for her in the end was to find a clinic where they put her to sleep painlessly, no matter how expensive it is.
More than a month has passed, and I still feel like a traitor, although I understand with my mind that it’s easier for her, and for everyone. My wife and I work shifts, but the old mother was not able to lift her and serve her...
        Sorry for the sentimentality.

        • Natalia

How I understand you Anatoly! This is not an easy decision to make! indeed, you feel like a traitor... Our Nerosha, lived in the family for 15.5 years, in March 2012 he passed away, the trauma suffered in his youth affected him - intervertebral herniawhole year They fought the disease, but had to be put to sleep, they invited the doctor home, they didn’t take them anywhere... the whole family cried... for a long time they couldn’t make a decision on purchasing new dog... but, nevertheless, at the end of December 2015, just before the new year, we decided! by train, on January 2 this MIRACLE was delivered to us! a frightened but tall boy (3.5 months), and now this bully saves us from laziness, and we are incredibly happy! And you know, sentimentality is human nature, and a dog in the family is like another child, only a little woolly….

          Tom

There is no betrayal..you acted humanely.....Betrayal is when you go out on the street...or they give you away...because of moving (this is like an excuse for everyone now)..I know all the cats with me and there are three of them...for permanent residence in Spain transported.. You did not indifferently watch how your devoted friend suffered and suffered... you helped him... he expected this from you.. unfortunately, sometimes euthanasia is the only way out...

          Basil

My Rottweiler at first tried to show that he was the master of the house, but when he realized that this was not so, he began to be trained well and serve. He worked as a guard, he grazed livestock (cattle) and drove them to watering places, he loved to hunt ungulates and really held them (mostly by the ear or tail) before I approached. He ate everything, loved to swim, understood people (he could detain a person until I approached and all silently, silently). He was fearless. After his death, I took a shepherd dog and no matter what praises were sung to it, it was far from being sung to the Rottweiler. In a word, it is cunning and lazy, but it is less amenable to training, a dog for protection and nothing more.

          Lyuba

In our family, the first was a Rottweiler girl, Evdokia Ilyinichna, they spoke kindly to Dusya, loved her, spoiled her, allowed everything even more than was possible, but there are such freaks who simply poisoned our girl, my soul still hurts, although 5 years have passed. Good dogs you just have to love them like a child, because they pay in kind.

          Emma

Friends! Please advise what to do. My son picked up a Rottweiler on the street. Apparently the dog is one year old. I spent a week wandering around garbage dumps. His son brought him home. The dog is worried, afraid that he is kicking him out. Family members are afraid of him. The dog is large and it is not known what kind of character he has, although he behaves obediently, like a cutie. But how he grew up, his character, his habits, all this is unknown. And no experience in keeping dogs. There is a cat in the house. We're hiding for now. The breed is large and serious, we are unlikely to cope. Where to place such a dog? Maybe someone can advise.

          • Julia

Hello! a kind person, I couldn’t stand it myself and adopted a 6-month-old Rottweiler. The previous owner no longer needed him, and he looked painfully like my dead friend, who, by the way, was also a foundling. Our new pet He didn’t have an easy-going disposition... The dog is serious, has big teeth... Consultations with dog handlers, daily classes continue. Of course, if you don’t have experience interacting with a Rottweiler and don’t have a lot of love and patience, as well as a lot of time, then it’s better to try to find a home. There are many accounts and Internet sites on Instagram where volunteers place animals in good hands.

            Christina

I was 3 years old when my parents got Igman. He was one year and seven months old, at first he decided that he was the boss of the house: he climbed onto the sofa, chewed on my toys, but Dad went to classes with him and he became the best dog in the world!!! Due to circumstances, at the age of 9 I had to walk with him myself, who was walking whom is a big question))) so leave the dog and it will be your most devoted friend and protector!!! Now I’m 24 and I still remember him as the best...

            Stas

If you love dogs, consider yourself very lucky. a dog who was betrayed by his previous owners and who happened to wander will be the most true friend, without any dog handlers, is better than taking a puppy and raising it ineptly. Under no circumstances should an adult dog be given as a gift or sold, because he regards this as a betrayal. Just feed her and treat her well. The dog doesn't need anything else. And he will not touch your cat, even if she behaves aggressively. An adult dog always feels false; if he feels that no one needs him, he will leave on his own. With any dog, you must always be honest. I have always had only big dogs, the first was a Russian Hound, then a Great Dane, then a Mastiff, now a Rottweiler. They are all very different, according to all sorts of descriptions of breeds, and dog handlers' bazaars, But, by about 3 years of keeping, they all acquired the traits of my character, and we always became best friends. Therefore, if you have people in your family with an aggressive character, then, of course, it is better for you to get a Pekingese or a lapdog.

            Elena

Our Rottweiler Sheriff lived only 9 years. He died of a heart attack. But he lived in Moscow. The city is not suitable for these dogs. He was very purebred and beautiful, we were terribly worried. These dogs are very smart.

            Basil

On my own behalf, I can add a real-life incident with my Elsa. Intelligence and a really great case was in the summer, my family and Elsa went to the seaside for the first time at the age of 5. During the rest, we noticed her fear of water or a wild reluctance to go there, although she knew how to swim (verified), so after the rest, she was extremely unwilling to approach the car and be held in our hands and avoided us, we decided to leave her for a day, after which we came again, but she I didn’t want to go, I didn’t want to run all over the beach, scaring people, I didn’t want to decide to leave her on the beach, I left, I left her on August 15th and regretted that I never pushed her into the car by force, which was not possible because of her avoidance, so I left her and I was extremely glad and surprised that she came as a lady on October 3rd, all skinny and dirty, and that’s the thing, the beach is 47 km from my house and at the same time you need to at least swim across a river 20 m wide if of course she didn’t cross the bridge and if she did so it’s still quite a feat for a dog who has never gone anywhere before, so we’ve been living with her for 9 years now, I don’t take her anywhere, I don’t test her fate, and by the way, she’s very lazy and leaves her laziness only so that the kids can play with her, she’s very patient and like as if she understands just how their mother pulls them around the house and when they ride on her, in general, the breed is kind, smart and they have a huge memory, I recommend it to everyone! and she also has a special sign on her chest in the form of an anchor, and the little one has it in the form of a cross.

Friends, tell me, my relatives found a puppy on the street in the snow, three weeks ago, small, it hasn’t opened its eyes yet. It turned out to be a Rottweiler, I don’t know whether it’s pure or a crossbreed, but the fact is obvious. So, we live in a village, they brought her to us. I feed milk mixed with baby food, with a pipette and a syringe, it seems to be growing quickly, but there are still concerns that it’s wrong, who can tell me what’s best to feed, just not veterinary vitamins and the like, for the villagers?!?! thanks

            • Marina

Hello. I understand that I read your question late…….probably your baby has already grown up big and beautiful (God willing.) I had experience in feeding a baby Rottweiler…..I fed him with baby food, fed him every 2-3 hours, basically like a child . Then she started feeding her - the yolk of an egg, at first she diluted it in milk a little at a time, then she gave it more. Just not every day! a week - 2 times. Then we switched to oatmeal, buckwheat (I poured sour milk into the porridge so that it would not be dry) and meat broth, and slowly began to give food. my Baron loved raw potatoes, carrots and watermelons. She gave them little by little, in moderation. Sometimes she would drop some vitamins into the food and give her calcium. I remember all this......and cry. our Baron lived for almost 13 years... it was not a dog in the house. it was a member of our family (the kindest, most understanding and the only one who did not remember the insults. or did not want to remember them.) A faithful, devoted friend. I don’t know a better person than our Baron. I wish everyone who has such a friend that everything goes well with you. Live long.

              Faith

I bought a Rottweiler puppy and read the reviews... I cried and worried and am very happy about my new friend))) My dog of the hunting breed was a loss and lived with us for 17 years... He got cancer and was put to sleep and died with him... I really wanted him to die. .I thought that I would no longer have dogs.. It so happened that I went to Moldova and saw a puppy from a breeder.. I held the puppy and howled on the street.. My husband and I went and bought...)))

              Serge

I work at a school. For several days, a Rottweiler, a male about a year old, was on duty at the entrance. I thought he was waiting for the child after school or the owner. But neither one nor the other turned out to be. The dog lived off handouts from schoolchildren. I felt sorry for her and I took her with me. I live in my own house. The wife is against the dog living in the house itself. I wonder if there have been cases where such a breed could spend the winter in the yard, naturally, in a kennel?

              Lyudmila

Yes, a Rottweiler is a member of the family, think carefully before getting one. When the time comes, it is very painful to part, as if part of the soul is dying. Smart is not the right word, a devoted friend until his last breath and very loving, despite his appearance. He loves to sleep in bed, or at least on the sofa. We had such a handsome boy, well trained, he got him at the age of five. And he never opened his mouth against the owners. We lived, as they say, in perfect harmony. Unfortunately, their life expectancy is short. When a joint sore approaches the age of ten, it can catch a cold and then it starts... It seems to be cured, but after a while it appears again. Intramuscular injections were given without a muzzle! Where they didn’t know the keys to the house at all, they were simply not needed)

              Igor

I’ll tell you this: I adopted a one-year-old refusenik, stupid, unsocialized, aggressive towards people and dogs. Now, he is the favorite of all the children in the yard, all the residents of our building and everyone who knows my dog. He loves and respects everyone, even though my dog has diplomas in “applied training” “OKD” and the PRO course (protection of the owner), has a prize-winning place in competitions in Protection of the owner. The Rottweiler is a friend, brother and guardian angel. It’s all about upbringing and training: the lazy one has a problem, and the one who who loves his dog-GOLD...

              Elena

When you decide to get this breed, it is useful to watch a video of a Rottweiler attacking a person. Considering instant reaction dogs and the strength of its bite, you need to realistically imagine what a frivolous attitude towards issues of education, obedience and training can result in for you and your loved ones. The breed is wonderful in all respects, mine will soon be 12 years old, his beard is gray, but the devil is still in his rib))), and he has weighed 37 kg all his life.

              Alexander

My Elbochka went over the rainbow 8 days ago. She was only 5 years and one month old. Half a year ago, epilepsy attacks began, they said not to undergo treatment, but she could live with this sore until old age, but after the next attack, and this was the next attack, convulsions, foam, involuntary urination, and in the morning her heart could not stand it.. I thought I'll loose my mind. I woke up at 5 in the morning, went out, sat on the porch and howled and howled like a dog. I saw her everywhere, heard her steps behind me. I have never met a smarter creature. He was a full member of the family. She constantly looked into my eyes and read literally everything in them. If you came into the yard strangers the only thing I always allowed her, apparently she needed it, was to sniff the guest and immediately look at me, what to do. If I said mine, everything means everything is calm, but sudden movements no one had any desire in my direction. I didn’t even need to give a command; a sharp turn of the head was already a sign for her. If I needed to bring something, hand it over, she ran up, and I just told her, no, not this, not that, and when I said yes, bring it, then there was always joy, then hugs, kisses………. It is very painful to part with them, but even without them life is somehow gray. Anyone who knew what it was like to live with a Rottweiler will not understand this. When I was choosing this breed, I read a lot about them. We had a Doberman Volt, he lived for 12 years, too. smart dogs, but the Rottweiler is a man-dog. Yes, finally, for those who may be reading these comments now and deciding whether to start a relationship or not, I’ll say that if you are ready to devote yourself, your love, your time and patience to him for the first two years, then later you will get your love back, only a hundredfold. back. As for the security of the yard, I really only got the keys to the house when everyone left together, but now I feel
that the rear is no longer covered. Now I’m again looking for a little bundle of black and red happiness, I understand that there will never be someone like my Elba, soft grass for you, my sunshine, but I probably won’t be able to live without them.

              Lana.

Hello. I had 2 little girls. The first, Chelzara, a very large, beautiful and intelligent girl, died at the age of 8 months, unfortunately, from plague with enteritis. It’s our fault, we didn’t get one vaccination on time, we were completely inexperienced... After more than a year I couldn’t get a puppy, even though I really wanted to. I just couldn't forget her. But then the breeder offered us another girl, G, Dalani, at the age of 4 months with a small defect in the form of a bump on her head. We took it and did not regret it! Smart, beautiful, a security guard to the core! She even protected me from my own mother! This is a family member. Our eldest son was born after her - she’s just a nanny! There was no clumsiness, she took care of him like a crystal vase. The training was serious, but I personally trained her at the club and didn’t trust anyone else. In the end, I was just MOM. She obeyed without question. It’s a shame that at the age of 8 she had to be put to sleep, because... I got sick with hypatitis (and where did I catch it!) and suffered. I treated her for a long time, she already began to walk under herself, and all this with such eyes full of regret! It’s simply indescribable. I, too, still feel like a traitor, that’s why I couldn’t get a puppy and go through this again (by the way, my mother almost ended up in the hospital, she cried and worried so much). And now my daughter persistently asks for a puppy and I understand that I have no right to deprive her of the happiness of communicating with this wonderful creature, but I’m not even considering any breed other than the Rottweiler. I tried to switch to husky, but I can’t, it’s not my thing. My soul and my heart are completely devoted to Rottweilers. Forever. Now the only question is how to find a puppy in our city and only from good parents. On New Year's Eve I want to give a little happiness to a child who will later become her good and faithful friend.

The Rottweiler is strong, robust and sporting dog. This is a medium to large sized breed with an incredibly powerful appearance.

The very presence of these dogs commands respect, and it is easy to be afraid of such a powerful animal.

However, those who have had the opportunity to meet Rottweilers know that behind this strong and sometimes terrifying appearance A properly socialized Rottweiler can have the "heart of an angel" and the "devotion of a saint."

Origin story

This breed originates from the Rottweil region of Germany. However, its history dates back to Roman times. At that time, the predecessors of the current Rottweiler were used as a livestock breeder.

When the Romans arrived in the Rottweil region, their dogs mated with local dogs. The result of these crosses was the “Rottweil Butcher's Dog”, which was used to assist local butchers during the slaughter of livestock. These dogs were responsible for controlling the most aggressive bulls and cows, making the butchers' work easier. Due to their bravery, they were also used to protect property.

As time passed, the breed's abilities were recognized for other functions and its popularity began to increase.

Currently the Rottweiler is recognized dangerous dog due to irresponsible and unscrupulous owners. Many hope that this will not harm the breed and will not put it on the brink of extinction.

Physical Characteristics of the Rottweiler

Perhaps the most famous characteristic of the Rottweiler is its head, with a wide to medium-length neck and a powerful muzzle that is neither short nor long. Its bite achieves all its strength thanks to its strong and wide jaw.

The origin of the Rottweiler is not mentioned in written sources. Although it can be assumed that its ancestors were dogs that accompanied the herds in Ancient Rome. Origin from Roman herding dogs The breed known today as the Rottweiler originated from the warlike Roman Empire, which dreamed of conquering Europe. To achieve this goal, she needed a huge army and an incredible amount of provisions to feed it. Considering that at that time there was no trace of refrigeration equipment, the meat intended for the soldiers had to be fresh, and therefore accompany them in a “live” form. To ferry, accompany and guard such “provisions” on the way and at night camp stops during long and grueling marches, the army needed a dog. A mastiff-like dog was perfect for this role.

Around 74 AD. The Romans crossed the Alps and settled in what is known today as Southern Germany. There is plenty of evidence pointing to vital important role, which was played by the brave Roman cattle dogs during the transition from Rome to the Neckar River.

A pack of specially trained, armor-clad, ferocious dogs were sent ahead of the attacking lines, fighting with furious fury and preferring death to retreat. The famous fanged fighters of antiquity were represented by varieties of mastiff dogs, which included the Rottweiler. Some of the dogs, as the armies advanced, settled in the conquered territories that now belong to Germany, France, Switzerland and crossed with local dogs. This was the beginning of several closely related breeds of Alpine Shepherds (Appenzell, Bernese, Greater Swiss and Entlebuch), as well as the breed that was previously called the “butcher dog” - the Rottweiler-Metzeterhund.

There is no doubt that thenThe ki of the original Roman cattle dogs guarded the herds on it over the next two centuries. Around 260 AD Swabian tribes drove the Romans out of Flavius Land. However, little has changed for dogs, since beef cattle breeding remained the main occupation of the peasants of those places.

Around 700, a local prince ordered the construction of a Christian church on the ruins of former Roman baths. During its construction, the builders came across red tiles lining the floors of the baths, which was reflected in the name of the city - “From red tiles” (“das Rote Wil”). It was later renamed Rottweil. At that time there were two varieties of Rottweilers. Large and heavy, which were used as draft force for transporting carts with loads and for guarding houses. These dogs were not suitable for driving and grazing cattle: they could not withstand exhausting marches and, moreover, often bit the cattle too high, which spoiled the skin and meat. A smaller race was preserved as a distillation. These dogs turned out to be more resilient and smart.

The influence of Rottweil as a trade and cultural center increased, and by the middle of the 12th century, a completely new building was built next to it, on the high banks of the river. new town. The security of the new location attracted new livestock traders, and butchers began to concentrate in its vicinity. The expansion of the meat market inevitably required more and more more dogs. There is information that butchers, indulging in Bacchus, after successful transactions, in order not to drink away all the money, trusted part of it to Rottweilers, hanging wallets around their necks. In those days, the reputation of the Rottweiler was so intimidating that no one dared to take money.

Another important center of grain and livestock trade was the ancient german city Rottenburg. The coat of arms of the Rottenburg butchers with the image of a “butcher dog” has survived to this day. These two cities, Rottweil and Rottenburg, gave their name new breed and played a huge role in its formation.

The work of a “butcher dog” was very hard. The dog had to not only herd the herd, but also take it to the place of slaughter. Cows, sheep and pigs obeyed quite well, it was more difficult with violent bulls. At first the bull walked quite peacefully, but then it began to become stubborn and rear up, making it difficult to drive away the cattle. And here the intervention of a beater dog was required - the so-called “stumpf” or “stumpfer” - a dog with a severed tail.

This is how Rottweilers were distinguished from other beater dogs with normal long tails. After barking, the dog had to bite the stubborn bull on command over the ankle of the hind leg, which was associated with a certain danger for the dog. But the more serious the situation became, the more enthusiastically the Rottweiler attacked the ferocious bull and always forced him to continue on his way. The ability to bring a ferocious bull to order earned the beater dog sympathy and popularity, which increased thanks to the intelligence and courage of his four-legged assistant.

The descendants of Roman dogs worked hard until the middle of the 19th century, when cattle driving was prohibited, and in addition to everything Railway and donkeys replaced dog carts. For the Rottweil butcher dog, as the breed came to be called, the times have come Hard times. The need for them has practically disappeared, but in those days dogs were kept only for work. Their number decreased so sharply that in 1882, at the Heilbronn Dog Show, only one was shown, far from best representative breeds

When Germany decided to revive this breed, only a few animals were found in the country. The popularity of the breed was influenced by an incident that became known to the general public, which contributed to the expression of interest in unique breed, when in 1901 in Hamburg, a police sergeant dispersed a crowd of drunken, raging sailors with the help of a Rottweiler.

A picture of a Rottweiler owned by Richard Strebelin appears in his book published in 1905.

During the years 1901-1907, the Rottweiler also gained recognition as a police dog. On January 13, 1907, the German Rottweiler Club (DRK - Deutscher Rottweiler Klub) was organized, and on April 26 of the same year - the International Rottweiler Club (IRK - Internationaler Rottweiler Klub). On August 14, 1921, the National Rottweiler Club of Germany - ADRK - was created in Würzburg, in which 3,400 Rottweilers were already registered. Since its inception, despite the difficulties encountered during and after the Second World War, the ADRK has managed to remain the leading club of the breed in Germany. For 70 years now, this club has been a trendsetter in the world of Rottweilers. This organization rightfully deserves the credit for creating the modern appearance of the breed. Although the improvement was still carried out with an emphasis on exterior forms, working qualities were not forgotten.

Rottweilers were brought to Russia in 1914. They were used in the fight against predators and to protect herds of domesticated elk. It turned out that this breed is very resistant to cold weather. This may explain its popularity in Scandinavian countries, where climatic conditions very harsh.

There was no breeding work with the breed in Russia - Rottweilers soon disappeared and reappeared only after the Great Patriotic War. They were brought to the Krasnaya Zvezda nursery. Then, under the leadership of G.P. Medvedev, work began on breeding the black terrier breed, the basis of which was such breeds as the Rottweiler, Giant Schnauzer, and Airedale Terrier.

Rottweilers have appealed to many dog lovers and have become, although still rare, very popular breed service dogs.

This historical event happened in the city of Kiel, the capital of the state of Schleswig-Holstein."
In one of the pubs, 14 tipsy sailors started swearing and fighting over a woman. The owner of the pub ran out into the street and called the patrolling watchman, who hurried into the pub with his dog. The dog happened to be a Rottweiler. Entering the establishment, he commanded in an orderly tone, “Quiet!”
Laughter was the answer and the tipsy people rushed at the guard. That is, they tried to do it. And they were immediately thrown to the floor by a dog who had spent his entire life working to pacify bulls.
The guard commanded: “Get up and line up!”
The sobered sailors lined up without outside help The dogs were taken out and escorted to the police station. Going out into the street, one of the sailors tried to run away, but was immediately thrown to the ground, which completely pacified the rest.

Admiral Prince Heinrich von Prussen, brother of Emperor Wilhelm, heard this story about the guard and his brave dog and ordered this couple to be presented to him. When we met, the admiral wanted to pet the dog. “Don’t touch Your Royal Majesty!” the guard shouted in fear. “The dog grabs without respect everyone who touches it. I ask your permission to sit down and take off the helmet. Now the dog knows that I am not on guard and you can pet it.”
The prince extended his hand to the guard across the table: “It gave me pleasure to hear about you and meet you outside of duty,” the admiral replied.
Two weeks later, guard Shultzman received an Order with a Garter from the ministry for his courageous act in the service.

Rottweiler(Rottweiler) - strong, powerful and reliable. Well, just a real man who you can rely on and be calm about your safety.

Rottweilers can be excellent watchmen, bodyguards, can transport cargo and serve in the relevant authorities - the army, the police.

Despite their (recently) bad reputation, Rottweilers are very smart and capable of the sweetest displays of the most tender feelings to both people and other animals.

Rottweilers are characterized by medium body sizes.

These are not squat and represent strength and power along with agility and endurance.

With a height of 61-68 cm, males of this breed can weigh up to 50 kg. Bitches are characterized by a height of 56-63 cm and, accordingly, less weight - up to 42 kg.

There are 4 sizes of this breed, which does not mean that there are several varieties of Rottweiler.

Photo 1. Rottweiler resting

The variety of sizes is only one of the features of this fighting breed, due to hundreds of years of formation of the qualities of Rottweilers - both physical and psychological.

For any size of the pet (or future pet), the correct ratio of body sizes will be considered the following: a fairly wide head is elongated, at the level of the scruff of the neck should not exceed 37% of the total body length in males and 36% in females.

Being a pronounced brachycephalic, the dog of this breed is distinguished by a short muzzle in relation to the head - no more than 40%. The remaining 60% of the length of the head is taken up by the skull.

A powerful and wide neck helps support the Rottweiler’s heavy head.

The eyes are dark almond-shaped. The ears are characterized by a “hanging” position; they have triangular shape and in relation to overall size heads - the ears are small and fit tightly to the head.

A scissor bite hides the brightly pigmented gums and teeth growing along the entire length of the jaw. A big nose, black in color, with wide nostrils.

The chest is quite wide, strong and muscular. The same can be said about the dog's bones.

Black with brownish tan, the Rottweiler's coat is of medium length with a thick undercoat.

History of the formation of the Rottweiler breed

The great-grandfather of all modern fighting breeds is the Tibetan mastiff.

Some modern researchers are ready to refute (or try to refute) this established theory. After all, there is no evidence about the ancestors of the Rottweiler.

Humanity has sufficient data indicating that the threads of the pedigree of this breed stretch back to the ancient banks of the Nile, where on the walls of the tomb of Pharaoh Tutankhamun one can see drawings of impressive scale, glorifying the battles and warriors who became famous there.

These drawings also contain images of strong, large and brave dogs that fought to the death, not yielding to their masters.

Near the palaces and temples of the ancient Egyptians you can also find images and sculptures of these strong dogs.

Their history can go back to the very dawn of civilization, to 4000 BC.

Their character, spirit and courage, as well as physical qualities, were tempered in gladiatorial battles, participation in hunting and military campaigns.

Photo 2. Rottweilers are real fighting dogs

In gladiatorial fights for animals, these dogs competed against tigers and lions and even against elephants (looking at the modern Rottweiler, I wouldn’t be surprised if 3-4 of these dogs defeated an elephant).

Disputes and disputes, but this moment All that has been proven is that Molossian dogs (that’s what they were called), which had excellent guard qualities, originally appeared in Europe and were brought there by the Phoenicians.

When dogs began to crossbreed with local representatives of other breeds, this became the beginning of new species, among which the Swiss described a black dog family, from which the local bicycle herders originated.

Once they reached Germany, these dogs were crossed with English (and possibly other) hunting dogs.

Already modified descendants of sentinels european dogs one day we found ourselves in the small town of Rot Weil.

Now it’s easy to guess that the name of this settlement later it became official name this breed of dog.

However, Rottweilers were not immediately called that. Initially they were called "Rot-Weiler butcher dogs" (Netzgerhund), which was associated with high level trade in Rot Vale.

Meat was traded there most of all.

The city of Rottenburg should not be overlooked, the breeders from which made a significant contribution to the development of the breed.

In the end, the very first description of Rottweilers appeared, dated 1901, and the first clubs for fans of this breed began to appear in 1907.

The founder of the breed is considered to be a dog named Lord Von Der Tekka.

He was awarded this honor for his unusually wide head at that time.

Rottweilers were brought to the vast expanses of Russia (Siberia) in 1914. Why go straight to Siberia?

Because dogs of this breed can tolerate cold weather well.

Finding themselves in remote Siberian settlements, Rottweilers became guards for livestock, successfully fighting off hungry taiga predators.

Rottweiler character

When properly given, the Rottweiler has amazing qualities.

These dogs are smart and easy-going, but at the same time they are strong and self-confident. Their external and internal calmness is by no means an optical illusion. They will never do anything that they should not or do not want to do.

They feel great both in an apartment, where you won’t notice much activity behind them, and in nature, where these dogs love to frolic.

As with any other guard dog, service breed, Rottweilers need to be walked more often.

Photo 3. The Rottweiler has a difficult character

Being a breed of athletic build with strong paws and bones, Rottweilers are great for morning runs and other sports activities. Especially if their leader (and it is necessary to be a leader for such a pet) encourages and shares this.

If a dog of this breed, while still a puppy, makes friends with another animal, then this will be the strongest friendship in the world.

An adult Rottweiler that has not been trained to interact with other pets may become aggressive towards the latter.

Despite the most better education and training, Rottweilers do not like strangers. If there is no danger to the owner or the dog himself, then he will simply become suspicious and focused.

And one moment. Rottweilers prefer a measured and calm life. Therefore, if there is constant shouting, swearing, regular guests and “partying” in the house, then a dog of this breed can clearly show anxiety and even become aggressive.

Looks like children, doesn't it?

And despite all the arguments that Rottweilers should be feared (we’ll discuss a little later), these dogs have earned the trust of many generations of people.

It is not for nothing that a monument to this dog was erected in the city of Rot Weil. It is not for nothing that the dog Sultan was awarded a monument at the Morfino estate.

There are many other examples of owners who are grateful to their dogs and who have fully experienced how loyal a friend a Rottweiler can become.

Should you be afraid of Rottweilers?

According to some statistics, in the United States, more than 16% of dog bite deaths occur in the breed we are talking about.

Photo 4. A well-mannered Rottweiler is absolutely safe for others

In this regard, many Insurance companies Rottweiler owners are often denied an insurance policy.

This is only due to the complete irresponsibility of people who once decided to get a pet from this breed.

Any qualified dog handler will tell you that a Rottweiler whose owner took a responsible approach to raising it will never end up in a criminal record.

How to test a Rottweiler for aggressiveness

Exists special technique to identify dogs of this breed that are aggressive and uncontrollable.

The test is quite simple, but it should only be performed with trained people and dog handlers.

The procedure consists of two stages.

At the first stage, the dog and its owner are placed in a place large cluster people who show no active actions, but only pass by harmlessly, every now and then approaching both the dog itself and its owner.

Photo 5. The Rottweiler must obey its owner unquestioningly

This stage is considered passed if the dog did not show aggression in this situation towards people passing by, even if they “accidentally” touched his owner.

Quite a logical test, isn't it? If aggression has been shown in any form, the dog is not allowed until the second test.

Next stage. A dog that has successfully passed the first test finds itself in a new situation where a professional dog handler, disguised as a robber (criminal, if you like), is already deliberately showing aggression towards the owner and/or the dog itself.

Of course, a dog with such protective and service characteristics as a Rottweiler is simply obliged to react and protect itself and its owner.

And the dog attacks (the dog handler has a special protective sleeve on his arm). At the same time, the “attacker” fights off the dog, imitating blows to its body.

And here, in fact, the test itself begins.

At the owner's first command the dog must return to him immediately, releasing the attacker, and take a wait-and-see position.

If the dog gets into a frenzy and cannot be controlled, does not listen to the owner, and does not let go of the “attacker” - the test has failed.

This is a reliable test that will test the Rottweiler (or any other dog) for its level of socialization and obedience.

Raising a Rottweiler

ANY dog must be trained from puppyhood.

Service and fighting breeds Dogs in this regard require much more attention.

Photo 6. Raising a Rottweiler requires patience. But it's worth it!..

If the owner cannot provide the required amount of attention to his pet, if he does not have time to train and raise the puppy, then it is worth thinking about whether he will cope with this giant in a year if he refuses to listen to him?..

The Rottweiler is a dog whose ancestors participated in wars and fought with lions in gladiator fights.

Under no circumstances should we take a superficial approach to their upbringing.

In the world great amount examples of Rottweilers saving lives and helping people.

Educate your friend, and he will definitely help you in the future and will never disobey.

A breed that evokes admiration and awe at the same time.

Rottweilers are respected not only for powerful jaws, but also for his natural intelligence and ability to educate.

The real history of the origin of the breed is unknown, but there are many assumptions. The most plausible version says that the breed originated from strong, hardy dogs that guarded the herds of animals that the Romans led as food during the conquest of Germanic lands.

Over time, the Romans were driven out of these lands, and On the site of the Roman camp, the settlement of Rottweil arose, which became the center of beef cattle breeding. The descendants of Roman dogs still did their job - guarding the herds of livestock. Cattle breeders often used them as draft force, which is why the dogs were called “butcher dogs.”

In the 19th century the breed almost disappeared. The history of the Rottweiler breed dates back to 1901, when a dog helped a policeman disperse a drunken crowd. It was then that we again remembered the special qualities of this dog: a high pain threshold, great physical strength, fearless readiness to intervene in an unexpected situation.

The breed standard, including exterior and mental characteristics, was determined at the beginning of the 20th century in Germany by the United German Rottweiler Club.

The Rottweiler's character is even, calm, friendly, and has strong nerves. They never bother anyone, do not spoil anything in the house, do not dig holes in the garden, are friendly to children and familiar people, indifferent to strangers, but attentive - they do not let anything slip out of their sight.

They always have only one owner. They recognize the family in which they live, enter into a conditional family, but obey only the owner. The dog is easy to train - once it is remembered forever.

Features of education:

  • the Rottweiler is well aware of his physical strength, That's why the owner will have to respect the dog - the dog will not tolerate insults and humiliation;
  • sometimes training is difficult, but not because the dog does not understand, but because he is stubborn, looking for, as they say, your weakness. If you don’t achieve the command every time again and again, then the dog, having realized that it is possible not to obey, will not even think about following your commands next time.

The Rottweiler has high intelligence and is capable of self-acceptance solutions.

The breed was originally bred as a guard dog, so do not forget about these dog skills. Seeing a threat to the owner, he quickly attacks, not thinking about the danger. His grip is strong, he grabs hard. Not afraid of pain. After a fight, she quickly calms down, which indicates a high organization of the nervous system.

The Rottweiler is used where pronounced character traits are needed, namely in guarding. They become excellent bodyguards and serve on the border.

The statement that a dog bred in Germany must have a German name is only partly true. Namely, because these names are short, impulsive, biting, like the blow of a whip. Besides, It is pleasant for a dog's ear to hear the sound "r".

The photos of Rottweiler puppies that are posted below should not be misleading: as they mature, they will become a formidable force.

Care and maintenance

Although Rottweilers have a good, dense undercoat, they will not tolerate temperatures below 10 degrees without harm to their health.   • excellent bodyguards: attentive, instant reaction, not afraid of pain;
  • high intelligence: easy to train, able to make decisions independently;
  • easy care.

Disadvantages of the breed:

  • stubborn: you have to be very persistent in the matter of training;

  • socialization should begin from the first day of life in the house;
  • let the dog understand (and insist on it!) that the person in charge in the house is the person;
  • treat the dog kindly, but do not spoil it.
